But there was one thing Lexie was absolutely sure of, Nelson only cared about his own interests. He was the last person she’d ever rely on.
Even if she needed someone to protect her, chances were, she wouldn’t go to him.
If the day ever came when she was no longer useful, Nelson would toss her aside without a shred of mercy.
After all, between them, profit always came first. As for feelings? They were nothing but empty words.
Lexie might be a little naive, but she wasn’t foolish enough to trust blindly. No matter what, she had to watch her own back and keep an escape route open for herself.
Still, where was that escape route supposed to be?
After her talk with Nelson, Arthur and Austin could tell right away that Lexie wasn’t looking so good.
“Hey, Lex, what’s up? Did Nelson say something to you?” Arthur asked, concern in his voice.
“Yeah, Lex, what did Nelson say? You look pretty shaken,” Austin chimed in.
Lexie let out a long, weary sigh, then spilled everything Nelson had said to her, she didn’t leave out a single detail.
She wasn’t clueless. When it came to big stuff like this, she wasn’t about to bottle it up and make the people who cared about her worry for nothing.
Besides, she still didn’t really understand how things worked in this world.
So she figured she’d just let Arthur and Austin handle it, they actually knew what they were doing.
One thing she was sure of, Arthur and Austin would never do anything to hurt her
After hearing what Lexie had to say, Arthur and Austin exchanged a look, and the tension in their shoulders finally eased.
“Lex, you really got caught up in Nelson’s words,” Arthur said, shaking his head. “But good thing you told us everything and stayed on your guard.
“If you hadn’t, you might’ve walked right into his trap.”
Lexie’s eyes brightened at Arthur’s reassurance.
“Dr. Cole, is there anything else I should be careful about? Please, you have to promise you’ll tell me everything,” she pleaded, worry clear in her voice.
“I’m totally clueless about how things work here. If I slip up, do something wrong, or accidentally piss off the wrong person, I’m done for.
“Nelson said those reclusive clans are insanely powerful, I really don’t want to cross them,” she added, her voice trembling a little.
Lexie stared at Arthur, her eyes wide with urgency, as if she was terrified he might be hiding something important from her.
Arthur couldn’t help but smile at how anxious she looked.
“Don’t worry, Lex. I told you before, as long as I’m alive, I won’t let anyone mess with you.
“You have my word, Lex. If there’s anything you need to know, I’ll tell you,” he reassured her.

“Lex, Nelson said some of those reclusive clans are insanely powerful, strong enough to go toe–to–toe with the Aetherion Federation and the Aetherion Empire.
“But not all of them are on the same level. For instance, Kaelen and his merfolk clan are also one of those reclusive clans.
“The merfolk rule every ocean in the Aetherion Interstellar Zone. They’re not just powerful and wise, they hold countless secrets of the deep.
“But no matter how strong Kaelen is, he’d never harm innocent people, and he’d never force anyone to do something against their will.
“If he ever crossed that line, he’d have to pay the price,” Arthur explained.
“He might’ve been a little intense about you, but Lex, when you and Kaelen formed that mate bond, didn’t you actually like him a bit back then?” Arthur asked gently.
“I… I was totally distracted by his face,” Lexie admitted, sounding a little embarrassed.
Lexie’s voice faltered, and she looked away, clearly feeling awkward.
“Distracted by his face? So you’ve got a thing for Kaelen’s looks, huh?” Arthur teased with a grin.
“Well, Kaelen’s ridiculously good–looking. If I didn’t like his face, I’d seriously need my eyes checked!” Lexie shot back.
Having a total hottie like Kaelen hanging around, flirting with her and confessing his feelings? If she didn’t feel anything, she’d have to be a total idiot.
“Exactly! You liked Kaelen too, that’s why the mate bond actually worked between you two,” Arthur said with a grin.
“Really? But what about Cristia? When he and I formed the mate bond, I was totally clueless, I didn’t know a thing about it,” Lexie said, pointing at Cristia, who was standing off to the side, her voice full of confusion.
“Lex, I could only form a mate bond with you after I gave you my fox bead,” Cristia explained, stepping forward.
“In the Nine–Tail Vulpes, giving you my fox bead means my life belongs to you now.
“It’s how we show love. When I gave you my bead, I was telling you, I’m yours, heart and soul. I want to spend my whole life by your side,” he said, voice full of sincerity.
Cristia stepped up, quick to pledge his loyalty,
“Lex, same goes for me! I gave you my mer pearl a long time ago. Seriously, you have to trust me!” Kaelen yanked Cristia out of the way, blurting out his words in a rush.
After hearing Kaelen and Cristia’s words, Arthur finally spoke up.
“Lex, those reclusive clans might be crazy strong, but trust me, there are some pretty big catches to their powers.
