Chapter 128
“I love it here. I seriously can’t get enough of it. By the way, Cristia, isn’t this your hometown? How come I haven’t seen any nine–tailed foxes around?” Lexie asked.
“Lex, if we walk a little further, you’ll see them,” Cristia replied.
As soon as Cristia finished speaking, Gary came up to them, falling in step with Cristia as they headed forward.
It was like he was guarding them, but also just there as a companion.
But when he turned to look at Lexie, his eyes were almost overflowing with something he couldn’t put into words.
Lexie was too busy checking out her surroundings to notice anything off about Gary.
As they rounded a corner, Cristia led Lexie into a wide–open space, and the sight in front of her made her free spot.
The place was packed with flirty fox–faced hotties, every single one of them looked like a total heartthrob.
Seeing so many fox–type studs all at once, Lexie’s mind went straight to the gutter, already fantasizing about them.
‘Oh my god! So many hot guys at once, I’m actually blushing, Lexie thought, but she couldn’t help but keep stealing glances at them.
Just as Lexie was happily checking out all the hot guys on both sides, Gary stepped forward and took the lead. That was when she suddenly realized something was off about the vibe.
The guys lining the path were shooting Gary looks that could kill, there was pure hostility in their eyes.
‘Hostility? Wait, aren’t these guys supposed to be Gary’s own people? Seriously, what’s going on here?‘ Lexie thought, totally confused.
Just as Lexie was still trying to figure things out, an older beastman stepped out from the crowd, his expression serious as he looked at Gary.
“Gary, are you really sure you want to hand over the clan leader position to Cristia?” the older beastman asked.
‘Yes, Grand Elder, I’m sure,” Gary replied.
‘Alright. Back then, you beat Cristia and took the clan leader’s seat for yourself.
‘When you kicked Cristia out, you forced him to drink the gene degradation potion, it almost killed him.
“Even if you’re handing the position back now, don’t think you can just walk away without paying the price.
“You’ve got two options: lose your tail, or drink the gene degradation potion.
“If you choose to lose your tail, you’re out, you won’t be a beastman of the Nine–Tailed Fox Clan anymore. But if you go for the potion, well, who knows if you’ll make it out alive.
“No one can say if you’ll get lucky like Cristia did and survive.
“So, Gary, what’s your choice?” the Grand Elder asked.
“Grand Elder, I, Gary Tucker, will live and die as a beastman of the Nine–Tailed Fox Clan,” Gary declared, his voice

unwavering.
Hearing Gary’s words, the Grand Elder understood his decision instantly, he’d chosen to drink the gene degradation potion and stare death right in the face.
When the Grand Elder pulled out a bottle of potion clearly meant for Gary to drink, Lexie didn’t even need to think twice, she knew it was the gene degradation potion.
If Gary actually went through with drinking that stuff, even with her power to heal beastman gene diseases, Lexie knew she wasn’t some miracle worker.
There was no way she could promise she’d be able to bring Gary back if things went south after he took the potion
Yeah, Gary could really get on my nerves with that smart mouth of his, Lexie thought, but it’s not like I ever wo dead.
Just the thought of Gary dying made Lexie’s heart pound with anxiety. She bent forward and gave Cristia’s desperate pat.
“Cristia, we have to help Gary! If he drinks that gene degradation potion, he might die,” Lexie blurted out, her voice full of panic.
“Lex, this is the rule in the Nine–Tailed Fox Clan. He set me up, stole the clan leader spot from me, and even turned me into my beast form.
“But I don’t hate him for it. In our clan, only the strong get to lead.
“Now, after barely a year as leader, he’s trying to quit just because he can’t handle the trouble.
“Every time the clan leader changes, it throws the whole Nine–Tailed Fox Clan into chaos. So to keep this kind of mess from happening again, Gary has to pay for it.
“He has to drink the gene degradation potion,” Cristia said, his tone unwavering.
Hearing Cristia say that, Lexie was freaking out inside.
“Cristia, is there really nothing you can do to save him? Gary could actually die!” Cristia blurted out, her voice cracking with desperation.
“Lex, when Gary came looking for me and saved my life, he already knew this day would come,” Cristia said, his voice steady but heavy.
“What?“Lexie gasped, totally stunned.
Right then, Lexie saw Gary take the gene degradation potion from the Grand Elder.
‘If he drinks that stuff, he’s really doomed,’ Lexie thought, dread washing over her.
‘It’s over… it’s really over… Lexie’s mind spun, panic rising up inside her.
“Is there seriously no way to save him?” Lexie pleaded, her voice shaking.
‘If Gary’s really going to die, then why did Cristia even bring me here?‘ Lexie wondered, her thoughts in a whirl.
‘Is he seriously making me watch Gary die? He knows that, even if Gary and I are always trading snark, all that back–and- forth is just talk. It’s not like I’d ever wish him dead!‘ Lexie felt a stab of guilt and confusion.
