“Lex, I seriously have no idea what’s gotten into Austin lately. He promised he’d help me sort things out after we left Merfolk Island, Nelson said, his frustration obvious.
“But instead of helping, he’s just making the rumors about Amya being a bionic human blow up even more,” Nelson continued, sounding even more annoyed.
“Now I’m totally swamped with all the drama about Amya, and Austin’s just decided to disappear,” Nelson muttered, shaking
his head.
“I honestly can’t figure out what he’s thinking. Lex, do you think he’s just being way too irresponsible?” Nelson asked, his irritation spilling over.
Nelson’s voice carried a mix of helplessness and anger.
Hearing Nelson’s complaints, Lexie could only try to explain.
“Nelson, Marshal Drake isn’t the type to shirk responsibility. He promised me that once he finished handling things outside, he’d come pick me up from Merfolk Island,” Lexie said.
“Austin always keeps his word. That’s why so many people trust him,” Lexie added.
“I’m sure he has his reasons for doing this,” Lexie said, trying to reassure Nelson.
“Oh, and I just got in touch with Marshal Drake. It was just a quick chat, nothing much,” Lexie said.
“Nelson, I swear his tone was kinda weird, but I can’t really say what’s off about it,” Lexie admitted, sounding unsure.
“I also tried to reach Ryker, he’s Austin’s personal guard,” Lexie went on.
“I called him on his Optic Brain, but he didn’t answer. It’s just… weird,” Lexie said, a hint of worry in her voice.
“Ryker’s never like this. Seriously, no matter how busy he is, he always picks up when I call,” Lexie added, sounding even more confused.
“But it’s been the whole day and I still can’t get through to Ryker’s Optic Brain,” Lexie sounded worried.
Hearing that, Nelson found it really strange too.
To be honest, no matter how much he and Austin clashed, Nelson never doubted Austin’s integrity,
Everyone in the Aetherion Interstellar Zone trusted Austin, no exceptions.
The way he did things always earned people’s respect.
But the way Austin was acting lately was nothing like his usual self; it was enough to make anyone start doubting him.
Suddenly, a thought occurred to Nelson. He fixed his gaze on Lexie through the Optic Brain, his voice low and serious.
“Lex, are you sure it was really Austin you spoke to just now? Is there any chance it was someone impersonating him Nelson pressed, concern etched in his voice.
Lexie was stunned for a second, she’d never even thought about that before.
“I… I’m not totally sure,” Lexie admitted, her voice wavering. But I know Marshal Drake’s Optic Brain number by heart.

There’s no way I could’ve dialed it wrong.”
“And the voice on the call was definitely his,” Lexie insisted. “I know his voice, I couldn’t possibly mistake it for someone else.”
Lexie felt a jolt of panic at Nelson’s words.
“Really? But Lex, you can’t forget, with all the tech we have now, it’s ridiculously easy to fake someone’s voice, their speech patterns, or even impersonate someone completely,” Nelson said, sounding serious.
“Did it ever cross your mind that maybe someone got hold of Austin’s Optic Brain and used some tech to reach out to you with it?” Nelson pressed.
That’s exactly why, even if the voice sounds just like Austin, if they don’t know your usual way of talking with him, you’d probably notice something was off,” Nelson added, worry clear in his voice.
“Seriously? Why would anyone suddenly want to impersonate Marshal Drake? And if someone really is pretending to be him, then where’s the real Marshal Drake? Don’t tell me something’s happened to him!” Lexie blurted out, her voice trembling with worry.
Nelson’s brows furrowed. ‘If someone really is pretending to be Austin, what are they after?‘ he thought, unease gnawing at him.
As he recalled all the recent turmoil in the Interstellar Alliance, a sense of dread settled over Nelson.
“Lex, I think we really need to go to the Empire ourselves and see what’s going on with Austin,” Nelson said, his voice low and serious.
“Nelson, with how busy you are right now, are you sure you even have time to go to the Empire?” Lexie asked, worry in her
voice.
“Yeah, I do. I’ve got a spatial transporter, I can jump to the Empire and back twice in a single day,” Nelson replied confidently.
“Alright, Lex, let’s drop it for now. Once I wrap things up here, I’ll head over to the Empire and check on Austin myself,” Nelson said, sounding determined.
“If he’s okay, I’ll contact you right away. But if someone really dared to impersonate Austin and hurt him… Nelson’s voice took on a dangerously quiet edge.
“Then this won’t just be an issue between the Empire and the Federation, it’ll be a problem for everyone in the entire Aetherion Interstellar Zone, Nelson added, his tone icy.
“After all, Austin’s credibility is not something anyone in the Aetherion Interstellar Zone can take lightly, Nelson said, his Lone resolute,
Just be careful, okay? And be sure to contact me as soon as you find Marshal Drake,‘ Lexie urged, worry clear in her voice.
Hearing Lexie’s words, Nelson smirked, his tone soft and teasing as he looked at her through the Optic Brain
Tex, telling me to be careful, are you actually worried about me? Nelson teased, a playful glint in his eyes
“No way! Of course not! Nelson. I have stuff to do Byel Lexie stammered, flustered
Not giving Nelson a chance to respond. Lexie hung up in a hurry
Just as Lexie was about to sigh to herself in bed, her gaze drifted out the window, and she nearly jumped out of her skin when she spotted a familiar figure.
