When Gary said that, Cristia turned to look at him, noticing the gloom in his eyes. He stared at Gary until the guy started to get uncomfortable, and then he couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

“What are you laughing at?” Gary asked, confused.

Gary had been wallowing in self–pity, so Cristia’s sudden laughter completely threw him off.

“I’m laughing because you’re out of your mind,” Cristia said. “Gary, you’re not exactly a kid anymore. You managed to kick me out of the clan leader’s seat, which proves you’re no slouch. Honestly, you’re probably way better than I ever was.

“You only held the position for a year, but you kept the whole tribe running like clockwork.

“That alone shows you’re a smart and capable beastman.

“But look at you now, you’re acting like a stray puppy, just feeling sorry for yourself.

“If Lex really didn’t care about you, she never would’ve agreed to form a mate bond with you in the first place.

“She picked you, so trust her, and have a little faith in yourself too.

“There’s real feelings between you two, so quit treating her kindness like it’s just pity. Acting like this is only gonna make her feel bad.”

“And even if Lex isn’t into you right now, what’s the big deal?

“Gary, compared to everyone else, you’re seriously lucky. Marshal Drake is crazy about Lex, but he still isn’t her official mate.”

“But you? Even if your first meeting with Lex was a little rocky, and no matter what she was thinking when she agreed to the mate bond, the fact is, you’re the one who’s her mate now.

“We beastmen have long lives, and now that Lex is here with us, we don’t have to worry about that gene disease ending our lives early anymore.

Cristia’s words left Gary at a loss for words.

Gary mulled it over and had to admit Cristia was right.

If Lexie really didn’t care about him, she never would’ve agreed to the mate bond in the first place.

Turned out, he’d just been overthinking everything and missing the obvious.

“You’re right. I guess I was looking at it all wrong,” Gary admitted.

Once that clicked for him, Gary’s mood brightened up right away.

“Now that you get it, just make sure you treat Lex right whenever you’re with her,” Cristia said.

“And seriously, don’t go calling Lex ugly anymore. You’ve seen her with your own eyes, she’s anything but ugly,” Cristia warned.

“I know she’s not ugly,” Gary said, sounding a little frustrated. “But Cristia, why do you and Kaelen always have to hide what Lex really looks like?

“Wouldn’t it be better to just let her look beautiful? Why do you guys insist on making her look worse than she actually is?”

Cristia let out a helpless sigh at Gary’s confusion.

“Gary, Lex’s status already puts her right in the middle of the storm.

“She doesn’t have any way to protect herself, and if we let her stunning looks be on full display for everyone to see, it’d just bring her nothing but trouble, there’s really no upside for her in that.

“Besides, when I started liking Lex, it had nothing to do with her looks.

“If someone only judges people by their appearance and falls for a pretty face, they don’t deserve to be with someone like Lex,” Cristia explained.

“Tch!” Gary scoffed.

Cristia asked, confused, “What’s that supposed to mean?

“Did I say something off? Gary, what’s with that look on your face?”

“But Cristia, it’s not just me, Lex is totally the same! She only likes the handsome ones and ignores anyone who’s not good- looking.

“Whenever she spots a hot beastman, her eyes practically sparkle. Lexie is such a sucker for good looks, so why don’t you ever call her out for being shallow?” Gary shot back.

Cristia replied, “Why would I call Lex shallow? She’s a female, if she wants any hot beastman, she can have whoever she

wants.

“If a beastman gets picked by Lex just because he’s good–looking, he should count himself lucky..

“But you’re not the same, Cary. You’re a beastman, and no other beastman is gonna fall for you, no matter how good–looking

you are.

“Do you get what I’m saying? Hmm…”

This time, he just gave Kaelen and Lexie, who were sitting by the beach, a look like he couldn’t stand them

“Cristia… Gary finally spoke up.

“What is it?” Cristia asked.

“If there’s a next life, I wanna be reborn as a female. And when that happens. I’m gonna use this gorgeous face of mine to flirt my way through life, Gary said, half–joking

“Ha! By the time you actually get to be a female, the Clyssia Virus will probably take you out before you even get a chance to live it up.

“If you still wanna party, you can do it as a ghost, take your time haunting the place! Cristia shot back.

“You,!” Gary blurted out, too pissed to even finish his sentence.

Cristia’s savage comeback had him fuming; he wanted to snap back, but when he tried, he just couldn’t find the words.

After Cristia shot him a look of pure annoyance and walked off, Gary turned his gaze to Lexie and Kaelen, who were sitting by the beach, laughing and joking around.

He let out a long sigh and had no choice but to leave as well.

Lexie and Kaelen were totally caught up in their own lively conversation, and Gary definitely wasn’t about to go over and be the awkward third wheel, he’d just end up sticking out like a sore thumb!

Thanks to that honest heart–to–heart, things between Lexie and Kaelen weren’t nearly as awkward as before.

Just as things were finally getting better between Lexie and Kaelen, Lexie started to notice that Gary had been acting really strange lately, almost like he was twitchy or just couldn’t sit still.

Like right now, for example. Gary was sitting next to her, peeling fruit, but with the sour look on his face, Lexie couldn’t help but worry that if he got annoyed with the fruit, he might just jab her with the knife instead.

“Gary, really, I can peel the fruit myself. If you have things to do, you don’t have to stay here with me,” Lexie said, trying to be considerate.

“Are you sick of me?” Gary retorted, his voice edged with irritation.

He held the fruit in one hand and the knife in the other, rolling his eyes at Lexie, his words coming out through clenched teeth.

With Gary looking like he was about to explode, Lexie said softly, almost afraid to set him off, “No, I swear I don’t! Why would I suddenly get tired of you? Really, I wouldn’t!”

“Good,” Gary grumbled.

With that, Gary turned back to peeling the fruit. Maybe he was just mad, or maybe he really had zero clue how to peel fruit

at all.

The fruit had started out as big as a fist, but now Gary had whittled it down to the size of a walnut kernel.

If he kept at it, he’d probably scrape away even the pit.
