At first, nobody believed there could be a female on Merfolk Island. After what happened with Amya, nobody could shake off the shadow it cast.

They’d been fooled once before, and the beastmen just refused to believe there was really a female on Merfolk Island. Besides, Merfolk Island was far from civilization, and there was no way one could build a real isolation chamber out there.

Because of the Clyssia Virus, females had to live in isolation chambers ever since they were born.

Since there were no isolation chambers on Merfolk Island, there was just no way any female could survive there.

But somehow, when word got out that Lexie wasn’t afraid of the Clyssia Virus and was even pregnant, the beastmen who’d been wavering finally had to believe the rumors. With Merfolk Island surrounded on all sides, they couldn’t ignore it

anymore.

The rumors just kept getting crazier. Even if some beastmen still didn’t buy that there was a real female on Merfolk Island, plenty of others just wanted to see the spectacle for themselves, hanging out not far from the island and watching from a distance.

Before long, more and more beastmen gathered around Merfolk Island. No matter how many times Austin and Nelson sent troops to chase them away, they just wouldn’t leave.

Seeing the beastmen just wouldn’t leave, Arthur wanted to transfer Lexie off Merfolk Island. But she was too sick to be moved, so they had no choice but to stay put.

Lexie was feeling terrible, so Kaelen, Cristia, and Gary all tried using the mer pearl and fox beads to transfer her illness away.

But no matter what they did, not only did it not help, it actually made her feel even worse.

Because she was so unwell, as she approached her fifth month, Lexie spent half her days asleep.

Arthur tried everything he could to examine Lexie, but no matter what he did, he just couldn’t figure out what was making

her sick.

At his witsend, Arthur had no choice but to call in the best doctors from across the interstellar zone to help him treat Lexie.

But no matter how many tests they ran, they still couldn’t find out what was wrong with Lexie,

All they knew was that Lexie looked paler and weaker with each passing day, and her health just kept spiraling down.

Seeing Lexie like this, everyone just wished the mer eggs inside her would be born already.

Maybe then, Lexie would start feeling better.

But Arthur knew in his heart that Lexie’s sickness had nothing to do with the mer eggs she was carrying.

Lexie wasn’t freaking out about her illness like everyone else was. It wasn’t that she wasn’t scared of dying, having already died once, she feared death more than anyone else.

But when she looked at her own gaunt reflection in the mirror, she didn’t feel miserable. Sure, she was tired, but not so much that she couldn’t get out of bed.

Lexie gently stroked her belly. She was almost five months along. Once the mer eggs were born, she’d have to leave with Austin, whether she liked it or not.

Chapter 146

Austin had promised her: as soon as the mer eggs were born, he’d get her out of here.

Just as Lexie was standing in front of the mirror, checking herself out, Gary and Cristia walked in.

Austin and Nelson followed right after.

Seeing the four of them come into her room, Lexie gave them a small smile and went along with it, sitting down at the table to eat her lunch, which honestly felt more like a late breakfast.

Nelson, sitting off to the side, watched as Lexie drank highgrade nutrient fluid like it was nothing, just as casually as drinking water.

He’d never seen anything like it before. After Lexie finished her twentieth bottle in a row, he finally couldn’t hold back and spoke up.

Lex, you really can’t drink any more. If you keep going, your stomach’s going to burst,Nelson said.

It’s fine, I’m still hungry,Lexie replied.

You’re still hungry?Nelson blurted out, totally baffled.

He couldn’t help staring at Lexie, who looked up at him with those puppydog eyes. Nelson hesitated, but seeing Austin and the others acting like this was perfectly normal, he realized this was just Lexie’s usual way of eating.

One bottle of highgrade nutrient fluid was enough to keep a beastman going for an entire day, most folks would be stuffed after just one. But Lexie had already downed over twenty and was still reaching for more.

As Lexie twisted open another bottle of highgrade nutrient fluid, Nelson leaned over to Austin and whispered, Is it really okay for her to eat this much?

Arthur checked her out. She’s fine,” Austin replied, totally unfazed.

Did they ever figure out why she eats so much?Nelson pressed.

Nope, Austin said, shaking his head.

When Austin said no, Nelson’s eyes grew more thoughtful and troubled, suspicion flickering beneath the surface.

It wasn’t that he minded how much Lexie ate; if something was this unusual, there had to be a reason behind it.

For a female to put away this much food in one go, something was definitely up. But since Nelson hadn’t checked her himself, he honestly had no clue why.

He just kept wondering, where was she even putting it all?

Seriously, it was just way too weird.

While Nelson was still puzzling over it, Gary, who’d been sitting next to Lexie, edged a little closer to her.

He sniffed the air, then leaned in, a puzzled look on his face, and asked.

LexGary said, his tone full of uncertainty.

What is it?Lexie asked, not bothering to look up as she drank her nutrient fluid.

She kept sipping, her eyes still fixed on her bottle.
