Chapter 16

After a brief pause, Leo gently patted Lexie’s back, feeling a wave of warmth inside.

Her warmth lingered only for a moment. As Lexie stepped out and said. Lex, I heard you’ve got your own Optic Brain now. Ca

his arms and stood before him, Leo gave her a gentle look I add you on Optic Brain?

Lexie replied, Of course you can, Leo. If your genetic condition ever acts up, just come to me.

I’ll help you as long as I’m still here. And if your family or friends run into trouble, I’ll help out. Don’t forget, my help comes free of charge.

Leo couldn’t help but smile at her words. Alright, it’s a deal. If Iver earn a crystal core for my service, I’ll give it to you.

Alright, thanks, Leo.

No biggie.”

Just as Lexie and Leo were talking, a soft cough interrupted then.

They turned to see that Arthur, who had been carried away earlier, was back.

Dr. Cole, you’re alright?Spotting Arthur in a fresh set of clothes and looking much healthier, Lexie couldn’t hide her surprise.

He replied, I’m good now, Lex. Seriously, I owe you big time. If you hadn’t stepped in, I’d probably be nothing but a cold, emotionless beast right now.”

No need to thank me. By the way, Dr. Cole, can I ask you something?

Go ahead.

Would you mind telling me what your beast form is?

Sure. My beast form is a mutated red raccoon.

A raccoon? Wow, Dr. Cole, I never would’ve guessed your beast form was that adorable.

Really? Lex, you just saved my life. How do you want me to thank you?

Oh, that’s not necessary. Dr. Cole, you’ve already helped me out a ton before. What I did just now was no big deal. You really don’t need to thank me.

Seeing Lexie turn down his offer of thanks, Arthur didn’t insist. He remembered catching a bit of her conversation with Leo about crystal cores when he came in earlier.

Lexie’s an artificial female bot. Bet she loves those sparkly crystal cores,Arthur mused.

With that thought, Arthur pulled a fistsized crystal core from storage space and handed it to Lexie, Here, this is a mid- grade crystal core. It’s for you.

For me? Really?Lexie stared at the crystal core in her hand, feeling the gentle energy radiating from it. She looked up at Arthur, her eyes wide, clearly flattered and surprised.

Yeah, it’s for you. Are you happy?

Of course.

With the crystal core in her possession, Lexie planned to wait for a chance when nobody was around. Then, she could place it in the treatment pod to cure her incurable disease.

Just the thought of having a chance to keep living made Lexie fel a surge of happiness she couldn’t contain.

Whenever Lexie was in high spirits, her joy was infectious, instantly lifting the mood of everyone around her.

Even without saying a word or making contact, the happiness radiating from her was so palpable that everyone in the room could feel it.

Thanks to her cheerful vibe, both Leo and Arthur couldn’t help but feel at ease, their bodies relaxing without them even noticing.

Oh, by the way, Dr. Cole, are you short on help around here?Lexie asked.

Short on help?Arthur repeated, looking a little confused.

Seeing his reaction, Lexie quickly added, I mean, if you need someone to help out, just let me know. I’ve got plenty of free time. I’m super handy. Whatever you need done, I can handle it

If she could stay in Arthur’s lab, she’d finally get the chance to use the crystal core to save herself, and no one would suspect a thing.

Until she could protect herself, she wasn’t about to let anyone discover her true identity as a female.

Meeting Lexie’s hopeful gaze, Arthur put on a faint smile before replying, Lex, honestly, the cleaning bots handle everything here. I really don’t need anyone to help with chores.

Oh, okay,Lexie mumbled.

The spark in Lexie’s eyes faded after hearing Arthur’s answer, leaving her looking a bit deflated.

Seeing Lexie looking so down, Arthur added, Lex, it’s not that I don’t need you.

I’ve got cleaning covered, but what I really need is someone like you, someone who can help soothe beastmen when their genetic condition acts up.

Whenever a patient comes in having a genetic flareup, you’d be a lifesaver. Would you be interested in a job like that?

Don’t worry, I won’t let you work for free. I’ll pay you for your help.

Lexie replied, I’m totally interested. Dr. Cole, you can count on me. I’ll do my best!

Alright, let’s skip today and start fresh tomorrow. Just swing by after breakfast, around nine, okay?

Absolutely, that sounds perfect.”

With the job locked in, her chance at getting better was finally whin reach.

After that, Lexie practically skipped back to her room. But when she walked in, she was totally floored because her once cold, metallic room had suddenly turned into a super cute, pink paradise.

She asked Ezra, who was hanging out by the door, and found out that Austin had sent people to redecorate her room as a thankyou for helping the soldiers.

But that wasn’t all. When Lexie opened her closet, she couldn’t help but whistle in surprise. There were so many clothes packed inside.

She sighed inwardly, Marshal Drake usually keeps things lowkey, but when he decides to do something, he’s seriously

generous.

The clothes are super cute, but to avoid blowing my cover too son, guess it’s safer not to wear them just yet

Besides all the cute clothes, Austin had even gone so far as to pula vanity right by her bed.

The creamy white vanity was decked out with gorgeous jewelry. Lexie didn’t know the going rate for gems in this world, but from the way these pieces were made, she could tell they were worth a fortune.

She picked up a necklace pendant about the size of a pigeon egg and turned it over in her hand. The more she looked, the more she couldn’t shake the feeling that it was actually made from a crystal core.

Just to be sure, Lexie took out the crystal core Arthur had given er and held it next to the pendant for a closer look.

Then, she was sure that the pendant really was crafted from a crystal core.

As Lexie was quietly inspecting the pendant, out of nowhere, a sabbing pain tore through her stomach, and her face instantly drained of color.

It hurtsso badlyLexie gritted her teeth, barely able to think through the agony.

Her knees buckled, and before she knew it, she was crashing straight to the floor.

Right then, Lexie couldn’t even care about the pain in her backside. With trembling hands, barely able to hold steady, she frantically dug through her storage space, grabbed a bunch of highgrade nutrient fluid, and poured it down her throat as fast as she could.

She had no idea what was going on, but after chugging more than a dozen vials, the pain inside her didn’t ease up at all. In fact, it only got worse, making her feel even more panicked and helpless.

The bonedeep pain was so intense that Lexie couldn’t help but let out a low moan.

She clamped her teeth down on her lip, stifling any sound. She couldn’t risk anyone overhearing her suffering.

After all, artificial female bots weren’t supposed to feel pain, and they definitely weren’t supposed to get sick.
