Wait! It’s not dead yet! I have a medical device in my room. Let me take it back and see if I can save it,Lexie

said.

With that, Lexie snatched the little fox from William’s hands and hurried back.

Aren’t you going out to play?William asked.

Nope, saving the little fox comes first, she replied.

After waving to William, Lexie headed straight to her room. She’d once been diagnosed with a terminal illness, but after Arthur cured her, she made sure to get a medical pod for emergencies like this.

Lexie was always scared of dying, so she’d asked Arthur for a medical device, just in case. If she ever got sick again, she’d have to rely on herself to pull through.

Once she got back to her room, Lexie didn’t waste a second. She hurried straight to the back, clutching the little fox close.

There was a small medical pod set up, just the right size for the little fox.

Lexie carefully placed the little fox inside, then set the crystal core on top of the pod. As the pod whirred to life, she crossed her fingers, hoping the little fox would survive.

She had never seen a purple fox with nine tails before. Maybe she was just being a softie, but as long as she could help, saving the little fox felt like the right thing to do.

With the crystal core powering it up, the medical pod hummed to life, bathing the little fox’s frail body in a gentle, soothing light.

Lexie stood nervously to the side, her eyes glued to the pod, her hands unconsciously balling into fists.

She silently prayed, hoping the little fox would make it through and regain its strength. The light inside the pod grew even brighter, as if some mysterious energy was pouring into the little fox’s body.

As time passed, the little fox’s body started to stir, and the dullness in its eyes slowly faded, replaced by a spark of life. Lexie couldn’t help but feel a surge of joy.

She knew her efforts hadn’t been in vain, and the little fox was going to make it.

Once the little fox was back on its feet, Lexie was totally going to claim it as her own. Nobody else wanted it, and since she’d picked it up, it was hers now.

But before she could officially adopt the little fox, she knew she had to run it by Arthur first.

Arthur was a total clean freak. He couldn’t stand even a speck of dirt.

So if she wanted to keep this fluffy little fox around, she’d have to get his approval first.

Lexie gently scooped the fluffy little fox out of the pod. She was just about to go hunt down Arthur when he showed up right at her door.

Lex, William told me you picked up a little fox. Let me check and see if it’s actually a beastman, Arthur said.

Sure, it’s right here,Lexie said, handing the fox over.

Arthur eyed the halfdead fox, gave it a quick wipedown with alcohol, slipped on his gloves, and then pinched the scruff of its neck with two fingers, holding it up like it was some weird science project.

He stared at it for ages, but honestly, he still had no clue what he was looking at.

Lex, how about I hold onto this scruffy little fox at my place for a couple days? I’ll patch it up and check if it’s actually a young beastman,Arthur said.

If we end up mistaking a beastman for a wild fox, that wouldn’t be good at all,he added.

Alright, I’ll leave it to you then,Lexie replied.

No problem. I’ll take the fox with me. Oh, and Lex, your school enrollment’s all sorted,Arthur said.

In a few days, you and William will head off to school together. Just remember, once you’re there, study hard. Don’t turn into some clueless illiterate,he teased.

Got it,Lexie replied.

Seriously? After more than ten years of school, I end up in a new world and everyone thinks I’m some illiterate bumpkin. Talk about frustrating,Lexie grumbled to herself.

After seeing Arthur off, Lexie turned to head back to her bedroom. But as she passed by the big shell, she froze. The shell was packed full of jewels again.

Didn’t I already take all the jewels out of this thing? How is it overflowing again?Lexie thought, totally confused. Was I just seeing things?

She checked her storage, yet the jewels she’d grabbed earlier were all there. Her mind was spinning. So how did the shell get refilled? Did it just spawn new jewels out of nowhere?

Man, is this shell some kind of freaky magic item or what?

Lexie couldn’t help herself. She dumped all the jewels from the shell straight into her storage. But before she could even blink, the shell was packed full of shiny gems again.

She grabbed handful after handful, but no matter how many times she emptied it, the shell just refilled instantly, like magic.

Hold up, is this shell some kind of bottomless treasure chest? No matter how much I take, it just keeps spawning more?Lexie thought.

Just imagining it made her almost bounce with excitement.

Seriously, I did not see this coming. The Merman King is way too generous. He just gave me something this crazy valuable like he was handing out snacks, she thought.

But leaving a treasure chest like this out in the open was just asking for trouble. Lexie tried to stash it in her storage, but it wouldn’t fit.

What am I supposed to do now? I can’t just leave this massive shell sitting out in my room forever, she grumbled to herself.

Frustrated, she gave the shell a smack. And just like that, with a loud snap, the shell snapped shut.

As soon as the shell snapped shut, Lexie’s surroundings spun. In the blink of an eye, she was no longer in her room, but smack in the middle of the ocean.

Lexie was sure she had to be dreaming. She gave her thigh a hard pinch, but that stung.

No freaking way, this is actually happening,Lexie thought. Crap, I’m so dead! I can’t swim to save my life. Dropped into the ocean like this? I’m done for.’

Panicking, Lexie started doggy paddling like crazy, trying to get her head above water.

But the more she paddled, the deeper she sank. She wanted to yell for help, but as soon as she opened her mouth, all she got was a mouthful of water and a bunch of useless bubbles.

Just when Lexie was at her most helpless, Kaelen, the same guy she’d seen on the beach yesterday, suddenly appeared right in front of her.

He wrapped his arm around her waist and shot straight up toward the surface.

As soon as her head broke through the water, Lexie instinctively latched onto Kaelen’s neck, gasping for air, desperate for breath.

Holy crap! I was literally one second away from dying here,Lexie thought, her heart racing.
