Chapter 62
Seeing Lexie’s reluctant look, Kaelen was filled with amusement.
He figured it was about time to stop teasing her. So he reached out and gently hugged Lexie, his voice soft and gentle.
“Lex, make sure you keep the shell I gave you. With it, I can always keep you safe,” he said.
“What?” Lexie blinked, a little confused.
“And Lex, I really like you. Do you believe in love at first sight? That’s exactly how I felt about you.”
“Huh? What? Love at first sight? Come on, that’s just lust at first sight.”
“But Lex, you’re not even as good–looking as me. Do you mean you have lust for me?”
“Well, uh…” Lexie stammered, at a loss for words.
Lexie looked at Kaelen’s stunning face and thought to herself, ‘Honestly, if the situation wasn’t so stacked against me right now, I’d totally have lust for him.‘
After all, this merman was so handsome.
Seeing Lexie’s dazed expression, Kaelen pressed a reverent kiss to her forehead, then looked into her eyes, speaking softly, “Lex, you should head back now. And don’t forget to miss me, okay?”
“Wait, what?” Lexie blinked.
When she saw Kaelen about to let go, Lexie freaked out and instinctively reached for his neck. But before she could grab him, her vision blurred. In the next instant, she was back in her own room.
There, sitting in her palm, was a tiny shell that had somehow appeared.
Lexie stared at the shell. It was just like the one Kaelen had given her, only a bit smaller.
Something occurred to Lexie. She gave the shell a gentle pat, and in a second, it grew bigger.
She patted it again, and just like that, it shrank back down.
Seeing that, Lexie remembered what Kaelen had said earlier, and it all clicked.
‘Damn, that whole thing was just an illusion,‘ she thought. ‘Ugh, that flirtatious, shameless merman! What a waste for someone that good–looking. Using that illusion trick to mess with me, huh?‘
Lexie huffed out a breath, still fuming, then flopped onto her bed with the shell in hand.
She complained inwardly, ‘I’m so tired. Did I just get lucky, or is this just crappy luck? How did I end such a ridiculously flirty merman?

He’s infuriating. Next time I run into that damn merman, I’m gonna scratch up his pretty face. He should learn some lessons!
Lost in her thoughts, Lexie slowly drifted off to sleep. She didn’t even notice the shell in her hand padsing softly with waves of glowing light.
Bathed in that glow, Kaelen’s figure appeared as if he’d stepped straight out of a dream, leaning casually by her bedside, watching her with a gentle smile.
And in that smile, there was nothing but pure, endless adoration.
Three days later, Lexie was finally about to start school. She stood in front of the mirror, fussing with her brand–new uniform, while William, under Arthur’s watchful eye, kept running around, double–checking all their school supplies.
“Lex, you get a day off every ten days. When you get your break, I’ll come pick you up and bring you home,” Arthur said.
“I’ve already talked to the principal. You and William will be in the same class together. If anyone tries to mess with you at school, just tell me. I’ll make sure they regret it.”
“And remember to take the medicine I made for you on time. Your genes don’t process things too well, so you really need to keep up with your meds, okay?”
“Yeah, got it,” Lexie replied.
“And most importantly. No dating, got it?” Arthur said, going full dad mode.
“Yeah, yeah, I know. You’ve said it like a thousand times since yesterday. Plus, I’m just a little beastman now. Who’s gonna wanna date me?” Lexie rolled her eyes.
“Don’t be so sure,” Arthur shot back.
Seeing how chill Lexie was, Arthur could only sorry and sigh.
Seeing that Lexie wasn’t really listening, Arthur could only turn to William, who was standing off to the side, and give him another round of instructions.
Bottom line, William had to keep an eye on Lexie and make absolutely sure she didn’t get mixed up with any of those wannabe bad boys, because honestly, they were not good enough for her.
William was so tempted to roll his eyes at Arthur’s endless nagging, but when he saw how dead serious Arthur looked, he could only sigh and nod.
“Got it, Dr. Cole. Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of Lexie,” William said.
Hearing William’s promise, Arthur finally nodded in satisfaction.
“That’s better. And remember, when you’re out, Lexie’s going by Hill, and she’s a beastman from the merfolk

tribe. I’ve already sorted out her new identity, so don’t go blabbing and accidentally expose who Lexie really is,” Arthur warned.
“Don’t worry, Dr. Cole. I’ll keep an eye out.” William nodded again.
Arthur added, “Alright, it’s getting late. I’ll drive you two to school. Lex, the dorms are quads. Besides you and William, there’ll be two other people in your suite. But don’t worry, you’ll each have your own room.
“Just make sure you’re careful. No shorts, no bare shoulders, and absolutely no getting all chummy or touchy- feely with your classmates.
“Some beastmen have these innate abilities. Just a bit of contact, and they can find out your real identity
“Like Kaelen, he only needed a touch to know who you really are.
“For your own safety, try not to get too close to your classmates, okay?”
“Yeah, I know. By the way, Arthur, what about the little fox with nine tails? Is it better now?” Lexie asked.
Arthur said, “All healed up. I’ve never seen a fox like that before. It’s probably a mutant breed.
“It’s actually pretty friendly. I dewormed it and gave it all its shots, so it’s clean now. Just take it with you and keep it as a pet.”
“Alright, thanks, Dr. Cole,” Lexie said.
She took the little fox from Arthur and looked it over. It was so much cuter now than when she’d first picked it up a few days ago.
“Arthur, is this a boy fox or a girl fox?” Lexie asked.
As she spoke, Lexie instinctively reached for the fox’s tail. But the moment her hand touched it, the fox freaked out and started squirming in her arms.
It looked like the fox was totally embarrassed and didn’t want Lexie checking out its private parts.
“Lex, quit it. It’s a boy fox. Come on, let’s go. We’re gonna be late,” Arthur said.
Hearing Arthur’s urging, Lexie could only give up on trying to check for herself whether the fox was a boy or a girl.
As Lexie headed out, she didn’t notice the sly glint that flashed in the little fox’s eyes as it nestled in her arms.
