Chapter 65
Eric’s words cut deep, leaving Lexie frozen in place. In her shock, she instinctively turned to look at William standing nearby.
When William nodded at her, Lexie’s heart sank.
Lexie’s mind reeled. ‘It’s really true?
‘Is it really just because they were created in Genesis Pods, with no real family bonds–only cold, transactional relationships?
‘Even a family heir, once they’re no longer useful, ends up like this?‘
Watching the beastman lying there, his breath growing fainter with every second, Lexie felt heartbroken.
Lexie thought, ‘He was on top of the world today, but just because of a gene disease, will he be nothing but a lost soul wandering alone tomorrow?
‘He has no family, no friends. Then what did all his struggles even mean?
‘If I weren’t a female, but a beastman, would my fate be even worse than his?
‘If this is what happened to Samuel, then what about Marshal Drake? Ryker? Arthur? And everyone else I know? Is this how it ends for all of them too?‘
Just thinking about it made Lexie’s heart ache. She stared at the massive wolf sprawled on the ground, and, almost without realizing it, she reached out with trembling hands, lifting his heavy head and hugging it tightly to her chest.
Seeing Lexie like that, Eric scoffed, then headed back to his room without another word.
“Hill, you…” William murmured.
Seeing Lexie like that, he couldn’t help but step forward, wanting to help her up from the ground.
“William, I want to stay with him until the very end. When his family comes to take him away, I’ll get up, okay?” Lexie pleaded.
How could he refuse her plea? He quietly stepped back, standing guard nearby in silence.
Lexie gazed down at the massive wolf lying in her arms, her hand gently stroking his head.
At that moment, she couldn’t help but think of her own father.
When her dad was dying, she was the only one in that huge, empty room, just sitting quietly by his side, watching him fade away, each breath weaker than the last.
Right before he passed, he called out for her mom.
Chapter 65
* atwachers,
It wasn’t until she saw the flat line on the monitor that Lexie finally let the tears she’d been fighting so hard to hold back fall.
She wished she could tell him she didn’t blame him for not keeping his promise to her mom, or for marrying someone else after her.
She’d forgiven him–so if she could do that, couldn’t he just come back to life?
But in the end, he just fell asleep and never woke up again.
As she held the massive wolf in her arms, Lexie gently stroked his head, her voice barely above a whisper.
She said, “Samuel, I’m really glad I got to know you. Just now, I was the one who stopped the doctor from putting you in a body bag.
“But don’t worry, if your family doesn’t want to look after you, I will. After all, I feel like this is my fault.
“But at the same time, I can’t help thinking I didn’t do anything wrong.
“I’m sorry. I don’t even know what’s going on with me. I just… couldn’t save you.”
“Even though we just met, I still hope you can make it through–be the student council president, be the heir, be the one everyone admires, their shining light.
“I’m sorry. I couldn’t save my dad, and now I can’t save you either. I’m so sorry, really.
“Samuel, you just smashed my door. You have to get up and pay me back for it. You can’t just die and leave me with a broken door.
“I’m begging you. Please wake up, okay? I don’t want anyone to die in front of me.
“I’m such a coward. I’m honestly terrified of someone dying right in front of me. I’m selfish and scared, and sometimes, I just get way too soft–hearted.
“So, just do it for me. For my hopelessly soft–hearted self, okay? Please, just wake up.”
Right then, Lexie honestly couldn’t tell if she was feeling sorry for herself or for Samuel.
All she knew was that she was hurting so much that it felt like her heart might break.
She pressed her lips together, and tears fell one after another, landing on the wolf’s head.
As the tears kept falling, Lexie instinctively lowered her head, rubbing her tears into the wolf’s fur.
She knew she was being a bit dramatic, but everything happening now just felt way too much like what she’d already gone through.
As Lexie pressed her face into the wolf’s fur, she didn’t notice the wolf’s body slowly shifting and shrinking beneath her.
Until finally, the dying wolf had turned into a completely naked man.

When Lexie finally sensed something strange about the wolf in her arms, she instinctively looked down. In that instant, she was met with an ethereal face and a pair of pitch–black eyes staring right back at her.
As their eyes met, Lexie felt the smooth, bare skin beneath her hand. Still not quite believing it, she tentatively gave him another poke, only for the undeniable, living warmth to finally snap her out of her
stupor.
“Holy shit! He’s alive,” Lexie blurted out.
Without thinking, Lexie tossed the man out of her arms and sprang back, jumping away in shock.
Then she threw her hands over her eyes.
But as soon as her hands went up, she couldn’t help but peek through her fingers, catching sight of the beastman slowly getting to his feet.
Her eyes slid down, and when she saw ‘that‘ spot, she instantly clamped her hands over her eyes again.
After just a moment, when she peeked gotten dressed.
ugh her fingers again, she was disappointed to find he’d already
‘Seriously? How did he get dressed that fast? I didn’t even get a proper look before he was already fully clothed,‘ Lexie grumbled to herself.
Reluctantly, Lexie dropped her hands and watched as the ethereal man walked over. She offered a hesitant handshake, her face a little awkward.
“Hey, Samuel. I’m Hill. I just started here today. Nice to meet you,” she said, doing her best to sound normal. Instead of shaking her hand, Samuel just stepped forward and pulled her into a tight hug.
Caught off guard by the sudden embrace, Lexie froze for a moment, feeling his warmth. After a brief pause, she slowly reached out and hugged him back.
“Samuel, I’m really glad you’re okay,” she said softly.
“Hill,
you. Seriously, thank you for saving me,” Samuel said.
thank you.
Samuel held Lexie tightly, his emotions a tangled mess that he couldn’t even begin to sort out.
He hadn’t been unaware of what was happening. He could feel his body growing colder by the second, his life slipping away bit by bit because of that damned gene disease.
