He said, Hill, once we pick up our uniforms today, freshman boot camp kicks off tomorrow. I’m not worried about it at all, but what about you? Aren’t you nervous?

Nervous? Not even close. You don’t get it, William. Yesterday Mr. White told me if he ends up as my instructor, he’ll definitely go easy on me,Lexie replied.

William couldn’t help but give a helpless smile.

He said, Lex, we’ve got 18,000 freshmen this year and hundreds of instructors. Seriously, what are the odds he ends up in charge of us and actually goes easy on you?

As soon as she heard William say that, her heart sank.

Lexie thought, feeling a wave of doubt, ‘He’s right. With so many students and so many instructors, how coul I count on Mr. White being my instructor, much less going easy on me?

What if my instructor isn’t Mr. White, but some super strict guy? If the instructor expects me to keep up with beastmen during the camp

She started to panic. She felt like she wouldn’t even last a single day, let alone three months in the camp.

Ugh, I’m just so weak, she thought, sinking into frustration.

So what am I supposed to do now? If Mr. White isn’t my instructor, I’m already freaking out,she blurted.

I’m so out of shape. Three months? I bet I can’t even last three days. I’m doomed. I’m toast. I’m so dead, she wailed.

Just as William was about to step up and reassure her, a cold voice suddenly rang out from behind them.

Samuel said, Hill, I’m the student council president. During your freshman boot camp, I’ll be serving as an assistant instructor, keeping watch over all freshmen to make sure everything goes smoothly.

I’ll try to get assigned to your group. If anything happens, or you need help, just come to me.

His voice was gentle but firm, instantly putting Lexie at ease.

Her head shot up, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Really? Samuel, if I get totally wiped out and can’t even move, you’ve gotta help me out, okay?

And can you put in a good word for me so the instructor goes easy on me? Just a little?

She pinched her thumb and forefinger together, looking at him with hopeful eyes.

Samuel gave her a helpless smile and gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

Chapter 78

He said, Hill, the boot camp is supposed to toughen us up, both physically and mentally. Even if I’m working with the instructor, I can’t just get you out of it.

But relax, I’ll be watching out for you. I won’t let things get too rough

Hearing that, Lexie still felt a flutter of anxiety, but the tight panic in her chest had eared

She nodded, then shot Samuel a grateful look. Samuel, thank you. Knowing you’ll be thereit really helps

Samuel smiled and shook his head, his tone gentle as he said, Alright, Hill, it’s getting late. Let me take you to pick up your uniform. With me, you’ll get it done way faster

Sure, I’ll leave it to you, Lexie said gratefully.

When they arrived at the uniform distribution area, it was a sea of peopleabsolutely packed

Fortunately, the beastmen at this military academy were all pretty selfdisciplined. They’d already formed four long lines, waiting in an orderly fashion.

Seeing everyone else queuing up, Lexie felt too awkward to cut in with Samuel So she politely declined his offer, and instead, she and William each joined a different line, waiting their turn like everyone else.

This way, whoever got their uniform first could pick up the other’s as well, speeding things up a little.

Once Samuel finished giving instructions, he strolled right up to the front of the lines to help out.

The moment Samuel left, Lexie realized that she was the shortest one in line.

And she wasn’t just a little short. Standing there, she looked like a tiny kid lost in a crowd of adults.

Honestly, it made her feel completely selfconscious.

To make things worse, the raccoon beastman in front of her kept swishing his big, fluffy tail. Every time it swayed, it brushed right across her face. Lexie felt totally helpless.

Once was bad enough. Lexie instinctively stepped back, hoping to escape the fur.

But the line was packed tight, people squeezing from the front and pushing from the back. She was stuck.

Again and again, that tail swept over her, until one final swat left her with a mouthful of fur. That was it. She’d had enough.

Without thinking, she grabbed the beastman’s tail in front of her and pushed it down, hoping to finally keep it out of her face.

But the thing was, a beastman’s tail was strictly offlimits. No one just touched it. It sent a signala very strong, very personal one.

So when Lexie grabbed it, the beastman in front of her suddenly groaned sofily.

That sound was impossibly gentle and almost seductive, like a spring breeze stirring ripples across a lake. For a moment, everyone nearby was left speechless, caught off guard by the unexpected charm.

Lexie froze. That faint, strangely flirty groan sent a jolt through her. She released his tail at once, her face flushing deep red.

She glanced up at the beastman, who had turned around with a mix of surprise and fluster in his bright eyes.

He was undeniably cute, his fluffy ears twitching and his cheeks flushed pink. Clearly, he was thrown off balance by what she’d just done.

SSorry, I really didn’t mean toLexie blurted out, her cheeks burning with embarrassment as she scrambled to apologize.

Lexie was mortified. She’d only wanted to get that giant tail out of her face, but somehow ended up offending the beastman and making a total fool of herself. How did things get so awkward?she thought, kicking herself inside.

But she just couldn’t believe how insanely cute and irresistible that raccoon beastman’s voice was. It was almost too much to handle.

Good thing I’m just a regular female, not a beastman,Lexie thought. Otherwise, with him looking all shy and adorable like that, I would’ve totally gone wild.’

But watching him look all soft and bashful, she just felt like something didn’t quite add up.

Then the raccoon beastman spoke, and everything clicked.

Hey! What was that for? Why’d you grab my tail like that? Are you into me or something? Trying to flirt?he teased, his voice sweet and playful.

Dude, I’m a beastman, not a female. We’re both guys. So, dating’s not really on the table,he said, giving Lexie an awkward look.
