“Why do you keep stopping Marshal Drake from knowing about Lex being a female, over and over again?” Serenus asked.
“If he found out Lex’s true identity, he’d definitely send the Aetherion Empire’s elite security tearn to keep her safe.
“Wouldn’t Lex be way safer with the Empire protecting her, instead of hiding out here with us!”
“No way. Absolutely not.”
Hearing Serenus’s words, Arthur immediately shot down the idea without a second thought.
“Why not?”
Serenus asked, looking puzzled.
“Why not? Let me break it down for you. It’s because of Marshal Drake’s status in the Aetherion Empire. If he ever learns who Lex really is, sure, he’ll be thrilled.
“But after that excitement dies down, do you even realize what Lex will have to deal with?” Arthur thought, his tone heavy with concern.
“What do you mean?”
Hearing Arthur’s odd tone, Serenus was utterly perplexed.
“Once Marshal Drake learns Lex’s true identity, after his initial joy, he’ll make it public right away–hell announce it to the world as a beacon of hope for all the beastmen who’ve lost faith.
“But as soon as Lex’s identity is exposed, what awaits her is a never–ending web of schemes and manipulation.
“Serenus, think about it. Right now, Lex is the only female left in the entire Aetherion Interstellar Zone.
“If word gets out about who she is, every beastman race will be vying for her, desperate to claim her for themselves.
“Those with ulterior motives will do whatever it takes to get close to her, or even use her as a pawn for their own goals.
“Her life will be turned upside down–she’ll be caught in endless conflict and danger.
“We can’t risk that. We can’t let Lex be thrown into such peril. That’s why we have to keep this secret–Marshal Drake absolutely cannot know who Lex really is.”
“Come on, that’s not really why you’re keeping Lex’s identity from Marshal Drake, is it?” Serenus shot back, not buying it.
“There’s another reason, and honestly, it’s the biggest one. Lex’s metabolism is super sluggish. She went

through a really bad illness before, and even though she’s healed up, her body is still pretty fragile.
“Her genes recover so slowly that if we don’t take proper care of her, she might not even make it past a hundred years.
“So, to make sure Lex doesn’t die young, I have to keep her identity under wraps until she’s completely back to full strength.”
After what felt like forever, Serenus finally broke the silence, speaking slowly.
“Dr. Cole, let me ask you something. Did you set up that whole thing with Kaelen Tideborne and Lex bonding on purpose?
“Lex was just minding her own business, went to the beach, and suddenly bumped into Kaelen? And then, just like that, they ended up bonded? That’s way too convenient.
“So, you were the one who arranged for Kaelen to bond with Lex?
“Was it all just because Kaelen’s got that insanely long lifespan?”
“That’s right,” Arthur said, not even trying to deny it. “I was the one working behind the scenes to make sure Kaelen and Lex ended up together.
“Merfolk are famously loyal to their mates, and Kaelen, being the Merman King, has a lifespan that’s basically the longest in the whole galaxy.
“With a life that long, once he bonds with Lex, he’ll share half of it with her–no question.
“And on top of that, when Kaelen and Lex become partners, his body will automatically shield her from some harm, even if she doesn’t notice.
“So even if my gene tech can’t make Lex live forever, with half of Kaelen’s years backing her up, she’s set for a long, long life.
“Plus, with Kaelen quietly protecting her from danger, Lex is even safer.
“With someone as useful as Kaelen, why wouldn’t I take advantage of him?
“And honestly, he’s totally fine with it. If I didn’t use him, the Merman King would just be single forever.
“Now that he’s got a mate, what’s there for him to complain about?”
Hearing Arthur’s blunt response, Serenus nervously licked his lips before asking,
“So, what about me? Did you arrange for me to meet Lex as well?”
“Nope,” Arthur said flatly. “Honestly, I never really rated you. You’re older, and your beast form is cold- blooded. Lex told me herself–she’s just not into beastmen with cold–blooded beast forms.
“And yeah, you’re strong, but you’re way too stiff–always following the rules, way too old–fashioned.
