“Good morning, Noelle,” Serena greeted back. "It's nice to see you."
Then, just as she sat next to her brother, she noticed Silas’s dark expression. It was only then that she realized someone else was in the room.
Brian Kingsley, the CEO of HelixPoint, and Gwen Porter were present.
Of course, how could Serena forget Gwen Porter? She was their neighbor and was known to be Brian's girlfriend.
Serena turned to Xavier, silently asking a question.
Xavier explained, “They are presenting the Vanguard upgrade as a team.”
Brian suddenly cleared his throat and said, “Good morning, Serena, Xavier, and Silas. I understand you and Noelle worked closely during the development of Vanguard, so I’ve brought her back as the project manager for Vanguard. She will oversee all future AI collaborations with VanderMed Technologies, from system upgrades to chip diagnostics and related integrations.”
“As long as Vanguard continues to be distributed and used in medical facilities, she will have a job,” Brian continued. “And Gwen will be Noelle’s Senior Project Manager. She’ll oversee Noelle’s work with your company.”
Serena frowned. She looked at Noelle, whose face was red, clearly in anger. But the latter looked down, evidently trying to control her emotions.
“Are you trying to say that if Vanguard is gone, Noelle will not have a job?” Serena asked.
It was less likely. Vanguard was their most successful medical technology yet, but still, the way Brian phrased it sounded more like an insult to Noelle.
When Brian struggled to reply, Serena scoffed. She turned to Noelle and said, “Don’t worry, Noelle. Vanguard is not going anywhere.”
“Mr. Kingsley,” Silas said, his jaw tightening. “I don’t like how you suggested it. If not for Noelle, do you think we would work with your company? There are other AI service providers out there—better ones!”
Silas pointed a finger at Brian, adding, “If you do not treat your employees well, Miss Rowan would be better off working for us, and we wouldn’t need to outsource an AI service provider anymore!”
"You can't do that," Brian objected. "Noelle is my employee."
"We absolutely can!" Silas slammed his hand on the table. Through gritted teeth, he said, “This meeting is over.”
He sneered at Brian. “Think about it, Mr. Kingsley! Get back to us when you have made the right choice.”
Silas left in a fit of rage.
Brian and Gwen began panicking. Then they stared at Noelle accusingly before leaving, seething.
Noelle did not hurry herself. She closed her eyes and took deep breaths.
After some time, she said, “Serena, thank you for believing in me. I guess Gwen will have no choice.”
