The Lies Behind Her Marriage novel Chapter 215

The crowd fell quiet almost instantly.

Everyone turned their attention to the soldiers.

At the front of the field stood a raised stage and a stone monument draped in a dark cloth, concealing the new name that would soon be revealed.

The formation reached the center of the field and halted sharply.

“Company—halt!”

“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, welcome to today’s ceremony commemorating the renaming of this installation,” the master of ceremonies announced. “Please rise for the presentation of colors.”

As the flags were carried across the field, the ceremony officially began.

A few moments later, after the formalities concluded, the announcer’s voice returned. “Please welcome Former General Norman Collins.”

All eyes turned toward the stage as Norman stepped forward.

Norman stepped toward the podium. For a moment, the usually composed commander stood silently, his gaze lingering on the covered plaque beside him.

When he finally spoke, his voice carried steadily across the ceremony grounds.

“Throughout my life, I have stood on many stages like this. I have received commendations, commanded soldiers, and watched this institution grow stronger with every passing year. By most measures, people would say I have lived a successful life.”

He paused briefly. “I wore this uniform with pride. I fulfilled my duties. I led men into difficult places and made decisions that carried great weight.”

A faint breath escaped him.

“But there is one responsibility in life that cannot be measured by medals or rank.”

His eyes moved slowly across the crowd.

“To be a father.”

The ceremony grounds fell quiet.

“I was an accomplished man in many ways,” Norman continued. “But as a father… I failed.”

The words hung in the air.

“My son was not like other children. He saw the world differently. Where others saw disorder, he saw patterns. Where others rushed forward, he took his time.”

Norman’s voice softened slightly. “And instead of learning to understand him… I chose distance.”

“That was the biggest mistake of my life,” he said, shaking his head.

A heavy silence followed before he spoke again, “My son lived his life without the father he deserved.”

Norman turned his gaze briefly toward Nathaniel. “And yet, despite my failures, his legacy endured.”

“My grandson, Nathan, stands here today as a man of extraordinary ability and character. He has achieved more than I ever expected… and more than I ever deserved to witness.”

“Stand, Nathan, let them see you,” Norman requested.

Several people in the crowd turned toward Nathaniel, and he stood up, waving politely at the crowd.

“He is talented, accomplished, and honorable. But what makes me most proud is that he carries the quiet strength of the father who raised him.”

Norman gestured toward the plaque mounted on a granite pedestal beside the stage. “So today, this base will bear my son’s name. Not because of what I achieved in my career… but because it is the only way I can honor the son I failed to stand beside.”
