Behind the Curtain.
Earlier that day, Noelle rushed to the hospital after learning that her son had suffered an asthma attack.
She had slept well the night before and never noticed Brian’s messages in the middle of the night. It was only around five-thirty in the morning, when she got up to use the bathroom and checked her phone, that she saw the texts.
Panic set in immediately. She left the house in a hurry and was caught in the rain on the way.
Her car had broken down.
She ended up hailing a cab, but the driver could not take her all the way to the hospital because of the traffic.
Noelle was soaked when she arrived at Rexam Central Medical Institute.
She rushed into the emergency room, where the waiting area was crowded with patients. She quickly took out her phone and called Brian, but he did not answer.
The nurses were overwhelmed. Even the one managing the ER counter simply raised a hand at her, signaling her to wait.
Instead, Noelle began searching for her son, moving from treatment bay to treatment bay.
Each one was separated only by curtains. She would peek inside or gently pull the curtain aside.
“Excuse me, I’m looking for my son.”
“I’m sorry.”
“We need epinephrine in here!” one resident doctor called out.
The drug epinephrine was not new to Noelle. Benson had already suffered three major asthma attacks that required the same medicine. She rushed toward that treatment bay, only to find the wrong patient.
“I’m sorry. I’m looking for my son.” She turned to the doctor and begged, “Please, I’m looking for Benson Kingsley.”
“Kingsley? I think he’s in Bay 201. Please, miss, you need to excuse us,” the doctor said.
Noelle searched for Bay 201, but when she opened the curtain, there was no patient inside. Clearly, the doctor had made a mistake. She was about to leave when she heard a familiar voice from the next bay.
“I’m sorry, Brian. I didn’t know shrimp could trigger an asthma attack. Didn’t we give him shrimp last week?”
“It’s not your fault. I didn’t know either. The doctor said it’s because he was already having a mild attack, and the shrimp only made it worse. Otherwise, it would have been fine for him to eat shrimp.”
“But I remember Noelle was very particular about his diet. She had always been the one in charge of Ben's care.”
Noelle froze when she heard Gwen and Brian’s voices.
She was immediately angered! They had just put her son’s life at risk!
Benson loved eating shrimp. It was his favorite, but Noelle had always been careful about allergy-triggering foods because of her son’s asthma.
Shrimp were fine if Ben was not having a flare, and they had to be fresh as well. Frozen shrimp, or worse, spoiled ones, usually caused an allergic reaction in Benson.
