The Lies Behind Her Marriage novel Chapter 234

Behind The Door.

A cold feeling settled in his chest.

Silas clarified, “What do you mean, little girl?”

“My friend. They always lock him in a room whenever there are visitors,” the girl said.

“Theo?” Silas asked, and she nodded.

Silas gulped and asked, “Where is your friend right now?”

The girl pointed up, saying, “It’s the last room on this side.”

“Thank you,” Silas said. He made his way back until he found the staircase. He hurried in the direction the little girl had given him.

The entire time, Silas’s heart kept beating loudly. Even his skin was crawling.

He stood in the hallway directly above where he had found the little girl. Silas marched forward. Most of the rooms he walked past were slightly ajar, but the room at the far end was closed.

When Silas reached it, he turned the knob.

It was locked.

He knocked on the door. “Anyone there?”

“Hello?”

“Who is there? Are the visitors gone?” a young boy’s voice rang through the door. “The key is with Miss Lorelie.”

No matter what the circumstances were, to him, it was simply wrong to lock a boy in a room.

“Stay back,” Silas said. “I’m going to kick the door open.”

“What? No! You are going to get me in trouble, Mister. Who are you?” the boy said.

But Silas did it anyway. He first tried to use his body to push the door open, creating loud banging sounds that clearly drew footsteps to the second floor.

Realizing the urgency of the matter, Silas finally used his feet.

“Urgh!” He kicked and kicked.

“Sir? Mr. Vander, what are you doing here?” It was Lorelie calling from behind.

“Stop that, Sir!”

He tried to play dumb and said, “Some child is stuck in here!”

Then Silas kicked again.

“No, Sir. You are mistaken!” Lorelie tried to pull him back, but Silas kept kicking.

“Are you trying to tell me that locking a child in here is not a mistake? Should we call the police now and file a complaint for child abuse, neglect, and endangerment?” Silas barked.

Lorelie stepped back, her eyes widening.

Just then, the orphanage’s directress made her way to the second floor.

Noelle also followed behind Paula.

Silas ignored them and drove a strong kick into the door.

A loud thud echoed.

The door burst inward, and a young boy’s voice followed.

“Mr. Vander, Sir, you can’t do this,” Paula cried, making Silas turn to her.

“Were you the one who locked this boy in this room? Do you know that counts as child abuse?” Silas said in anger. “Why was he locked in the first place? I should have you reported.”

His voice carried authority, low and firm, leaving no room for argument.
