Silas fell silent. He drew in a deep breath and said, “You always arrived at school at exactly 7:00 a.m.—unless Brian brought you. On those days, you’d come in later… around 7:15 at most.”
He paused, then added quietly, “I hated Brian for those fifteen minutes. That was fifteen minutes I had to wait for you.”
Next, they passed by the school’s gym.
As they did, Silas and Noelle held hands.
“Look, Noelle, your favorite subject,” Silas teased.
“Oh, please.” Noelle rolled her eyes. She hated Physical Education the most.
“Do you remember that volleyball game where you were suddenly excused?” Silas asked. “The day you tried to fake an injury?”
Noelle pouted. “I thought the teacher just… felt bad for me.”
Silas shook his head. “No. I spoke to him.”
She blinked. “You did?”
“Yes,” he said calmly.
Noelle narrowed her eyes. “What did you say?”
Silas didn’t even hesitate. “I told him you had diarrhea and were too embarrassed to say it.”
Silence.
Noelle’s face paled. “You told the teacher I had what?!”
Silas lifted a shoulder slightly. “It was effective. You should thank me for watching out for you.”
Honestly, Noelle should be mad, but high school was so long ago. She simply laughed it off. “I can’t believe you!”
“Believe it. I did things for you—you just didn’t know,” Silas said, pulling her hand.
They found themselves at the school’s open lawn next. Silas took Noelle to a shaded area and sat by the bench. He smiled at Noelle, urging her to take the seat next to him. “This is my favorite spot.”
Noelle sat down and frowned. In front of them was the view of the restroom. She made a face and asked, “Why?”
Silas pinched her cheek. “Because if you turn to your right, you’ll find your favorite spot. That’s where you often waited for Brian while he had club meetings.”
“Silas Vander! I was worried I might not catch you!”
Noelle and Silas turned to find Beck Carter, one of their high school classmates.
“Beck,” Noelle called.
They exchanged handshakes. After that, Beck explained his presence at the school. “I work here now. I’m the school administrator.”
“Oh.” Noelle smiled. “That’s great.”
“Beck was the one who helped me get authorization to enter the school grounds,” Silas told her.
“Well, thank you, Beck,” Noelle said.
“You’re welcome, Noelle,” Beck replied. “By the way, why are you out here dressed like a nun in trousers?”
Noelle flushed. She shot Silas a glare before replying to Beck, “It’s a long story.”
Silas laughed.
