Asleep.
Nathaniel gently wiped Serena’s collarbone with a damp towel. After that, he put her hospital gown back on.
He returned to the bathroom and washed the towel again before cleaning Serena’s face.
“There you go, love. You look fresh and more beautiful now,” he said, smiling. Then, he sat on the side of the hospital bed, just watching her.
The doctors did not shave her head completely. Only a small section of her hair had been shaved for the surgery, and there was a bandage on that side of her head.
She lay there, sleeping so peacefully it almost felt like a dream.
At first, Nathaniel found comfort in the sight. But slowly, a quiet ache settled in his chest. He wished Serena were already awake. Still, he knew this was not new to him.
The surgery was a success.
It had been more than a week since the operation. After a procedure like this, it was not unusual for patients to be kept sedated for a period of time, something Nathaniel had seen before with Bianca.
However, Serena’s case was different.
This time, it involved removing a tumor.
Because the tumor had been located in a sensitive area of her brain, swelling developed the day after the operation.
To allow her brain to rest and reduce the pressure, the doctors kept her under controlled sedation while they monitored her recovery closely.
The good thing was that Serena could breathe on her own. She did not need a ventilator.
Over the past few days, Nathaniel had barely left her side.
He cleaned her up every day. He personally checked her vitals, got reports from her doctors, and often lay with her in the hospital bed.
Sometimes, he talked to her. He would update her about the progress of the twins. Even if she could not hear him, he wanted to share the stories with her.
It was almost lunchtime, but Nathaniel did not feel hungry at all.
He just wanted to be… with his wife.
A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.
Celine and Sterling walked in.
On the day of the operation and the following day, Silas, Noelle, Xavier, and Alice were there, but VanderMed Technologies needed their leaders. Since then, they had all taken turns flying back to Velmon to see Serena. Only Celine and Sterling remained in the city the entire time.
“Nathan, what did the doctor say this time?” Celine asked.
The doctors had stopped her sedation the day before, but delayed awakening was expected. At present, Serena remained unresponsive, with only slight finger movements and occasional eye blinking.
“They said she’s stable. The swelling is under control. We need to give her time to wake,” Nathaniel answered.
Sterling smiled and approached Serena. He kissed her forehead and said, “Sweetheart, Mom and Dad are here.”
Celine turned to Nathaniel and said, “You should go home. Have a nice warm bath. While Serena needs you, the kids also need you.”
Nathaniel looked down at his crumpled shirt. He laughed. “Do I look that bad?”
Celine chuckled. “You haven’t even shaved in days. Will my daughter recognize you when she wakes up?”
Truth be told, it had been two days since Nathaniel had a bath. After cleaning up his wife and checking her condition, he would often go straight to work.
The dining table in the suite had now been converted into his mini-office. At night, he would call the kids, but he had not been to Bianca’s mansion for the past two days. This was because he was hoping Serena would wake up to the sight of him. But unfortunately, his wife was still sleeping.
“Did you eat breakfast?” Celine asked. “I think you didn’t.”
“Nathan, you also have to take care of yourself,” Sterling reminded him. “Ali and Bastin have been asking why you did not go to see them recently. Go to the kids. Celine and I will take care of Serena.”
Nathaniel hesitated but eventually nodded. “You are right, Dad.”
