Chapter 93: Fireworks

Fireworks.

‘No, that can’t be right,’ Serena thought internally.

After she and Nathaniel stared at each other, Serena turned to the monitor in front of them and said, “I already kissed my son

Unfortunately, the mechanical voice said, “Kiss not detected. Please try again.”

Serena blinked.

A chuckle escaped Nathaniel’s lips.

“This isn’t funny, Nathan,” Serena snapped at him, while he only shrugged.

“Mommy, I need to peewee,” Sebastian said, making a face. “Now!”

Serena,

“Okay,” Serena said. “Let’s try this again.”

She got up and carried her son, kissing Sebastian again and again on the cheek, and even on the lips.

“Mommy, it tickles!” Sebastian complained, laughing.

But despite that, the mechanical voice kept repeating, “Kiss not detected. Please try again. Warning: No kiss, no exit.”

Nathaniel coughed into his fist. He pointed at the cameras and said “I think the sensors are only picking up on us.”

When Serena turned to the cameras, she realized Nathaniel was right. The cameras were only following her and Nathaniel.

“I can’t believe this,” Serena muttered. She craned her neck, hoping someone would hear. “Hello! Let us out! My son needs to go to the restroom!”

“Kiss not detected. Please try again. Warning: No kiss, no exit.”

“What the-“Serena’s face darkened. She called out again, “Hello! Anybody there? A real person?”

“We can’t kiss. We are divorced!”

“What’s divorce?” Sebastian asked, holding himself. “Mommy, I need to pee.”

Finally, an employee spoke through the cameras. “Is there something wrong, sir, ma’am? This is a couple’s booth. In order to exit, the adults must kiss.”

“We can’t,” Serena said firmly. “We are divorced.”

“Gentleman, if you could let us through, we would appreciate it,” Nathaniel added.

“I see,” the employee said. “I’ll have to call my manager and disable the kiss requirement on the photo booth. Give me about ten minutes.”

“Mommy, I need to pee!” Sebastian cried, his brows knitting together.

Serena felt heat rush to her cheeks. “Oh my God. This cannot be happening.”

“Mommy-1-Daddy, I need to peewee,” Sebastian repeated, now turning to his father for help.

While Serena spiraled in panic, Nathaniel simply stared at her.

Realizing she had no other choice, Serena put her son down and toned to Nathaniel. Very quickly, she landed a kiss on his cheek.

Still, the mechanical voice said, “Kiss not detected. Please try agal Warning: No kiss, no exit.”

“Ah, ma’am, you have to kiss on the lips. It’s a couple’s booth,” the employee reminded. “Should I call my manager now?”

First of all, Serena was stunned that the employee still hadn’t called his manager. But Sebastian could barely hold it in.

Fuming, she turned to Nathaniel, cupped his face, and gave him a quick peck on the lips.

At the same moment, Nathaniel held her face as well.

The contact sent a strange sensation down her stomach, which she promptly ignored. Still, the feeling lingered even as the doors to the tunnel opened.

Her heart drummed against her ribcage, and her hands sweat.

As their cart moved to the exit, the mechanical voice said, “Thank you for joining us at LoveSnap Tunnel. Connection recorded. Memory saved. Have a wonderful day.”

Serena didn’t have time to dwell on the kiss. She rushed to the nearest restroom and helped Sebastian relieve himself. When they were done, she found Nathaniel and Alisa reviewing the photos from the booth.

Alisa ran to her, handing her one photo, a bright smile on her face.

In it, Serena and Nathaniel were sharing a peck. Their eyes were closed, their hands resting on each other’s cheeks.

It looked real, like they were back to their old self.

The image stirred memories, but just as quickly, Serena reminded herself of how easily Nathaniel had let go of their marriage in the past. She pretended it didn’t affect her at all.

Though her daughter was smiling from ear to ear, Serena casually slipped the photo into her purse. She asked, “Are there photos of you and Sebastian?”

Alisa nodded and pointed at Nathaniel.

“Great, let’s take a look,” Serena said.

The twins were thrilled with their photos. Serena supposed the experience mattered more, so she pushed aside the photo booth kiss and continued with the rest of the day.

They relaxed again at five in the afternoon. Dinner followed, and then they waited for the last special moment. Nathaniel had planned a fireworks display for the kids.

The park had an observation deck where they could all sit comfortably and watch the night sky.

Alisa sat in Nathaniel’s lap, wearing her headset, ready for the sky o light up.

Sebastian stayed by Serena’s side, leaning against her chest.

In another chair, Bianca smiled quietly. The bodyguards stood behind them, along with a few park employees.

“Ready, guys?” Nathaniel said. “In three, two, one!”

And just like that, the sky answered him.

A sharp whistle cut through the air, followed by a bloom of gold and red. Then another, and another, each burst painting the night sky in shimmering layers.

Serena noticed Alisa gasp on the other chair, her small hands gripping Nathaniel’s shirt as the light reflected in her wide eyes. With her headset on, the sounds no longer overwhelmed her.

Sebastian lifted his head from Serena’s chest, his mouth falling open as silver sparks rained down like falling stars. He leaned closer, afraid to miss even a second.

“Wow! Amazing!” the little boy exclaimed, his smile endless.

The fireworks continued. Eventually, Serena leaned back in her seat and soothed. After a full ten minutes, she found herself
