The slap finally snapped Caleb out of his daze. He sprinted out of the private room and called out just as Nova was about to leave. "Nova!"
Caleb lunged forward to grab her arm, but Mr. Donald furiously stepped in his way. "Caleb! You were the one who said you didn't want to marry her! What do you want with my daughter now?"
Caleb was seething with indignation, but he forced himself to swallow his pride. "Mr. Donald... I just want to speak with Nova in private for a moment."
Seeing how angry her father was, Nova gently touched his arm. "Dad, it's fine. I'll just have a quick word with him. Wait for me in the car."
Her parents exchanged a worried glance, terrified that Nova was going to cave.
Nova gave them a reassuring smile. Satisfied, the two of them turned and headed for the car.
Nova looked blankly at Caleb. "What do you want?"
The hotel lobby was crowded, so Caleb awkwardly pulled her into a quiet corner. "Did you mean what you said in there, or were you just throwing a tantrum?"
"I meant every word."
Nova stared at him intently, her eyes completely devoid of the adoration and warmth she used to have for him.
Caleb frowned deeply. "Is this because of what I said at the entrance? Or are you mad because I saved Sylvie instead of you at the pool?"
Nova was rapidly losing her patience. "I don't like you, and I don't want to marry you. Is that clear enough?"
Hearing that, Caleb absolutely snapped. "Nova, what the hell is your problem?"
"Caleb, you literally told me you didn't want to marry me, yet here you are chasing after me. Is it because you finally realized that marrying me is the only way your family escapes bankruptcy? You kept accusing me of looking down on you, but the truth is, you're the one disgusted by your own situation! You want to have your cake and eat it too. You gladly take everyone's help and soak up the adoration, but you act like you're above it all. You're such a hypocrite!"
