Chapter 120
Massimo stalked through the house. He couldn’t believe Elena was even entertaining her half–brother. She had told Massimo herself she held no love to her family, so why was she helping him!
In his anger, Massimo moved quickly. He located the Marino’s ledger quickly–hidden underneath the master bed. The Marinos, it seemed, were cliches in every sense, from their back–stabbing nature to their preference on hiding spaces.
But Massimo had the ledger now, and that was all that mattered. Massimo had the proof he needed to ruthlessly take out the deal breakers.
Of course, with no backup, Massimo couldn’t take all thirty men downstairs back to New York. He decided to take the family head–James Marino–and interrogate him.
Massimo went back downstairs and found James–still unconscious. He tied the man up and shoved him into the trunk of the car.
He then made some calls to his men. They should be able to get here in a few hours, but Massimo knew that gave these snakes plenty of time to act. If the Marinos had allies or enemies, people would inevitably go missing between when Massimo left and his people arrived.
The only method of ensuring everyone was punished was to act now. No one would bat an eye if Massimo decided to ruthlessly kill everyone present.
But Massimo saw the way Elena’s face had dropped when she walked into the dining room. It was the same expression she had after he had saved her life in her first gun fight. Massimo didn’t want to cause Elena any more harm.
Which is why he was so annoyed she was talking to one of her family members–those rats always seemed to make her frown.
Elena met Massimo downstairs. Together, they shared what they had found out.
“Of course it’s Tyler again,” Massimo gritted out. “I don’t know why you even bothered treating that man.”
“Because I’m a doctor,” Elena argued.
“You’re my doctor,” Massimo retorted. “And I didn’t need or even want you to treat him.”
Elena didn’t understand why Massimo was so annoyed by this. “He’s my brother,” she said simply.
“Being family doesn’t mean you ignore someone’s crimes,” Massimo said harshly. “Would you have done the same for your father? The man who sold you like some prized cattle?”
Elena frowned. She thought about all the horrible things her father had done and how terribly he had abused her. It would be hard to set aside my feelings enough to treat him,” Elena confessed.
“But,” she continued, “Matteo isn’t my Dad–at least not yet.”
Massimo’s eyes darkened. “Did he help you escape your father? Did he ever even stand up for you at all growing up?”
“No, but it wasn’t because he’s evil–he’s just thoughtless,” Elena defended. “I had to grow up fast because of how our parents treated me, but it’s like their treatment of Matteo meant he never grew up. He’s more incompetent than anything else, Massimo.”

For a long moment, neither of them said anything.
“You’re too forgiving,” Massimo whispered.
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” Elena said.
“Isn’t it?” Massimo asked. “You’d get in a lot less trouble if you weren’t so empathetic and understanding all the time.”
Elena frowned.
“The people here tonight,” Massimo stated, “are guilty of breaking mafia rules. It doesn’t matter what their intentions were–their actions still have an effect. People still suffered.”
Elena knew what Massimo was saying was true. He was reminding her that Matteo had worked with deal breakers -which meant he also needed to be punished.
Elena nodded slowly. “I know you have to do what you must as the Mafia King,” Elena said calmly. “I won’t fault you for anything.”
After their conversation, Massimo sent Elena to check on the unconscious mafia members. He couldn’t care what happened to them–he just needed an opportunity to talk to Matteo alone.
Massimo went back to the office where Matteo was resting. Matteo turned to him with a hesitant smile.
“Do you have any more questions for me?” Matteo asked awkwardly.
Massimo shook his head. He pulled out his gun and aimed it at Matteo.
“I’m here to teach you that some crimes can never be forgiven, Matteo Vitale,” Massimo said coldly.
