The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 18

Chapter 18

The don glanced briefly at Elena before studying his servants.

You can all leave the estate now. You’re fired.

That got them to protestthe beginnings of apologies and excuses started to tumble out. But Don Massimo wasn’t swayed.

Are you going to leave on your own or get dragged out by security?

The three servants stopped talking. Eyes still wide with fear, they all remembered to bow before walking out the giant main doors.

Elena saluted her boss. I appreciate the save once again. Though I confess I don’t like that it’s becoming a pattern.

Massimo frowned. If they speak so loosely, they’re bound to spill important secrets sooner or later. Firing them is a safety precaution, nothing more.

Well, if we’re already talking about work,Elena said with a smile, you wouldn’t happen to have my week’s assignments, would you?

Massimo stared at her. You’re injured.

Believe me, I’m aware.Elena took the opportunity to lean against the open wall. She was regretting trying to wander the estate by herself, but at least her pain meds were kicking in.

Then you should be aware,Massimo said slowly, that you need to rest. You are not expected to work while recovering.

That caught Elena by surprise. With all the rumorsand firsthand experience of her boss being totally devoted to his job, she had expected him to demand the same rigor from his employees. And Massimo hadn’t let being shot in the leg stop him from running around and completing mafia deals.

I would have Luca take you home,Massimo continued, but things have been chaotic within the mafia lately. Since things have been unusually dangerous, you should stay here at the Ferraro estate until your wound has healed.

You’re sure about this?Elena pressed. She still couldn’t believe what her boss was saying. This isn’t an elaborate scheme to gently fire me or something?

Massimo smiled. He could do that?! The sight made Elena wonder if her pain medication was stronger than she thought.

I don’t make a habit of increasing the salaries of employees I’m about to fire, Dr. Elena.

Elena couldn’t help but stare. Since when was her boss kind of nice?

You don’t have to look at me like I’ve grown an extra head Massimo chided flatly.

Does this mean I passed the probationary period?Elena asked. Have I earned your trust then?

Massimo frowned again. He seemed to hesitate for a long moment. It’s more like I’m tabling it for now.

That doesn’t exactly make any sense.

Maybe you just need more rest, Dr. Elena.

I’m serious,Elena continued. It seems like you trust me enough to make me a full employee, or do you give vacation time to all your interns you’re reserving judgment on.

Massimo waved a hand dismissively. Think what you will. It’s not your concern anyways, so if my thoughts are beyond my doctor, that’s fine.

Elena smiled. She had a feeling Massimo did trust heras much as he could trust an exmafia woman anyways. Why else would he let her into his home for an extended break?

Maybe working with him wouldn’t be as bad as she had feared.
