Chapter 181

Leo was insistent, Massimo realized. It was impressive how he could say such sweet–sounding words while: stirring up onlookers. With just a sentence, Leo was firmly placing the idea in everyone’s minds that Massimo and Elena had been together when she was already promised to Tyler.
With the cloak of social niceties, Leo had shielded himself from harm. It would make only Massimo look foolish if he called Leo out for his behavior–the consigliere’s words were too subtle to be considered purposeful barbs.
Too bad for Leo that Massimo didn’t play by the usual social norms and their rules.
“I do take whatever I want,” Massimo confirmed, placing a hand over Elena’s.
Elena felt him firmly grasp the fake wedding ring she wore. It wasn’t honestly all that different from the one she usually wore around her neck. But still, it felt odd to wear something around her ring finger–especially now that Massimo was firmly grasping the metal ring.
“And I don’t stop until it’s mine,” Massimo continued. His voice was firm and cruel, but Elena didn’t find herself afraid. She had grown used to Massimo’s manner of speaking—if anything, she felt comforted by it.
Massimo turned to look away from Leo. Instead, his gaze was fully on Elena.
“My wife’s father is unfortunately a fool,” Massimo stated, “and her former fiancé is even more of one. A real man holds onto what he has. If he lets it go, then he’s no man at all.”
Elena felt a shiver run down her spine. She knew Massimo could be stubborn and possessive–often times, too much for his own good. But she knew that Massimo meant what he said.
He wouldn’t stop at anything to protect what was his—whether that was his estate, his men, or even Elena herself. And there was something oddly soothing about knowing she was so highly valued.
Massimo had fought Tyler for her. Massimo had sent her to the best hospital to recover. And now Massimo was all insulting Tyler and her father in front of the most powerful men in New York city for her.
Massimo finally turned back to the rest of the table.
“That’s what it means to be Mafia King,” he said seriously.
As the meal continued on, Elena made several excuses to check on the dishes–just as she and Massimo had planned beforehand.
Because Elena wasn’t really checking on the food. She was meeting with the servants in the kitchen to learn what they had overheard.
“We need every scrap of information we can get,” Elena had told Massimo hours ago. “And mafia members always ignore anyone lower than them.”
“So you think the servants might overhear something useful then,” Massimo had finished. “It’s not a bad idea, and you’ll be able to sneak away more freely than I. Go for it.”
And it turns out Elena was right. All but the most paranoid mafia members let their guard down around those many people serving drinks, snacks, and even their meals.

Already, the servants had several leads about potential deals in the making–as well as bits of gossip about cafferent families‘ troubles. Luca could probably verify them by tomorrow and discover how true they were.
Only one thing still weighed on Elena’s mind. “What are people saying about the Mafia King and Queen?” she asked the servants.
“Mostly that you’re a wonderful match,” one servant replied. “People think you’re a very romantic, regal pair.”
“Perhaps too romantic though,” a different servant piped up. “Almost everyone agrees with Consigliere Leo Morello at this point. Several people are betting that you’ve been together since before you were even promised to Don Tyler Morello.”
Elena frowned. Could she do anything to disprove this rumor? Massimo was technically married to Aria while Elena was still dealing with Tyler–and since no one knew about Aria, there might be roundabout “proof” that Massimo was already with his wife by then.
Then again, Massimo didn’t seem too worried about this. Elena could probably afford to wait and plan with him later. No one seemed mad at Massimo for technically breaking another man’s marriage contract–perks of the Russian Roulette game finding them innocent of all wrong–doings.
“Anything else?” Elena asked.
The servants looked at each other. “There are rumors about you, Elena,” one finally spoke up, “but they’re far less kind.”
