Chapter 183
Elena smiled. She was surprised by her husband’s sudden sweetness,
“You should tell your boss,” he continued. “Make him fire or kick out whoever is saying anything mean about you,”
Elena nearly laughed. “That would only make things worse,” Elena responded. “They’d start saying I have my boss wrapped around my finger or that I’m a witch who cast some wicked spell on him.”
“That’s stupid,” her husband instantly replied.
“It is,” Elena agreed. “Anyways, I’m not looking for solutions right now. I know you can’t help with any of this.”
It took a long moment for Elena’s mystery husband to reply.
“I can listen?” he offered hesitantly.
“You’ve done enough,” Elena insisted. “I shouldn’t even be complaining about this to you. You gave me permission to do this, so it’s literally only my fault for being in this uncomfortable situation.”

Elena frowned at that. Why would she be disappointed?
“I doubt that’s true,” Elena replied. “Trust me, I’ve had a lot of disappointing life experiences. You’re not topping them.”
“Can I have some more time?” her husband replied, ignoring her joke. He must be really serious.

Elena put her phone back into her pocket. She still needed to check in with the servants in case they heard

something important and then hurry back. Though she had spent far longer texting than she expected, she was glad she had chatted with her husband.
Elena felt ready to get back to the party- the reminder that she had people supporting and believing in her had helped renew her energy.
As Elena returned to the banquet table, she was surprised to spot Massimo returning as well. He smiled at her and she returned the grin with plenty of warmth.
“Shall we?” he asked, offering Elena his arm.
