Chapter 186

Though Elena initiated the kiss, she hadn’t known what to expect. She’d never kissed someone on the lips before! All she knew was that if she didn’t, they’d be letting Consigliere Leo–and therefore his boss Tyler–win.
And Elena couldn’t let that happen.
She knew they wouldn’t get away with a quick peck, but Elena was unprepared for Massimo to kiss her back. She was even less prepared for the amount of passion in such a small act.
Massimo’s lips were softer than she expected. He was more fluid in this small gesture–each movement of his lips felt purposeful. It was like Massimo was trying to pour as much love and passion into Elena as he could.
Though that was ridiculous–Massimo probably was just following Elena’s lead. It was important they both maintain this ruse, after all.
At least, that’s what Elena thought.
But even though Elena knew the romance of this kiss was fake, she was reluctant to pull away. It felt like Massimo’s desire–his love–was filling into every ounce of Elena’s being. Elena felt herself become overrun with want.
Then Elena heard a man whistle–and she was reminded of their audience. She was reminded why she had even dared to kiss her boss in the first place.
Elena pulled away from Massimo and turned back to the other mafia members. She didn’t dare look Massimo in the eye, too ashamed of how vulgar she had acted. She already felt awful about springing a surprise kiss on a man who clearly wasn’t over his ex yet.
An older mafia gentleman cleared his throat. “That was a fine game, young lady. But why don’t we have some more refreshments before we go another round?”
Several party goers nodded in agreement.
Elena quickly got up. “A fine idea. I’ll have the servants send out dessert!”
The rest of the banquet went off without a single problem. At least, Elena was pretty sure it did. Everyone left with a big smile on their face, but Elena herself couldn’t recall a single event.
She kept thinking about the kiss. Her first real kiss! A kiss Elena herself had started and ended!
And Elena had gotten so wrapped up in the pleasure of it all, she had forgotten one important thing—that she was kissing Massimo and not her husband.
Then Elena began to worry. Sure, her husband had been understanding about her situation and her needing to lie about being another man’s wife, but this had to be a step too far. It was practically cheating!
Even though the banquet ended late at night, Elena refused to go to bed. She stayed up and started drafting a text to her husband.
But her words failed her. Elena could offer plenty of excuses–that it was necessary to maintain her cover, that she didn’t even think of her boss romantically at all, that she’d never do it again if her asked—but they all felt flimsy and weak.

Elena frowned as she deleted yet another potential text message. She sighed.
“Why is this so hard?” Elena grumbled.
Elena didn’t know what to say. She felt stuck.
But was that perhaps a good thing? How was a kiss on the cheek really different from a kiss on the lips? And hadn’t her husband given her blanket permission to do whatever she needed?
And if it wasn’t important, there was no reason to bring it up, was there?
