Chapter 188
Elena could already feel her heart beating faster and faster with each letter she looked at. Almost all of them were for “the Mafia Queen.”
But Elena had barely survived pretending to be Massimo’s wife for one evening! There was no way she could attend almost thirty different events and maintain her cover.
Massimo finally looked up from his work. “Let me see those.”
Elena shakily handed her boss the large pile of mail. He silently but quickly looked through it.
“There’s nothing you need to respond to in these,” Massimo said simply.
Elena’s jaw fell open wide. “Nothing?” she repeated. “That can’t be right.”
Massimo sorted the letters addressed to Elena into two piles. Most were left in the original stack.
“These are all from the wives of smaller families,” Massimo explained as he pointed to the tall stack of letters.” They’re not even related to important dons. Any gathering they host is going to be filled with useless chatter and gossip.”
Elena nodded. She guessed those would be alright to skip. “So are these ones sent from important families?” Elena asked as she reached for the tiny pile.
“Yes,” Massimo confirmed. “But again, you don’t have to go to any event you don’t want to. I’ll let you know if there’s anything you should attend to maintain our reputations.”

Elena looked through the letters—there weren’t many that Massimo deemed worthy of a second–glance. It
made Elena all the more certain that she should attend at least one of them.
Elena’s eyes widened as she spotted an invitation from a familiar name. It was an official invite for the tea party the nice old lady had mentioned!
“Don Grasso’s wife has invited me to a tea party this upcoming weekend,” Elena said, flashing the invite to Massimo. “It would be good for the Ferraro family if I attended.”
Massimo looked closer at the invite. “It’s women only,” he said with a frown.
“I’ll be alright on my own,” Elena replied confidently. “We’re close to earning the trust of the Grassos, I can feel
it.”
“I have a supply deal with Don Abano in the works now,” Massimo stated coolly. “And I have a few contracts being written up with the Grasso family and some of their allies.”
“All the more reason for me to go then,” Elena insisted. “If you’re only writing up contracts, that means you’re in a delicate position, doesn’t it?”
Massimo frowned. “I suppose you can go if you really want to,” he said sullenly. “But leave if you feel uncomfortable.”
Elena nodded. She was surprised Massimo was being so considerate of her feelings. It’s true the banquet had been uncomfortable for her–she had confessed as much to her husband–but she was surprised Massimo had

noticed that.
“I will,” Elena promised.
The rest of the week passed by without incident. Elena’s biggest problem was finding a suitable outfit for a tea party.
She had picked out a light blue button–up blouse with ruffled at its sleeves and diamond buttons. The collar of the shirt came right to her collar bone and also was adorned with ruffles and some lace. Elena felt those touches of femininity would allow her to wear simple sleek black pants without appearing too masculine.
