Elena was glad for the darkness–she didn’t want Massimo to see how startled she was by his question.
“What?” she asked, as calmly as she could. “Could you repeat that?”
“What would you want your wedding to be like?” Massimo asked once more. The question didn’t make any more sense the second time.
“Why?” Elena asked.
Elena heard Massimo shift in his own bed. Was he turning away from her or towards her? Elena didn’t dare roll over and find out.
“I just want Gavino’s wedding to be nice,” Massimo replied.
Elena wanted to melt into a puddle. Of course that’s what he wanted to know! Elena didn’t know why her heart was beating so fast for–Massimo was just being odd with his words again.
Elena rolled over. Massimo was indeed looking back at her.
“Wouldn’t it be better to take inspiration from your own wedding?” Elena asked with a smile.
“I didn’t have a traditional ceremony,” he said coldly. “Or even a wedding at all.”
“What?”
“We just signed the papers.”
“You can’t just do that,” Elena complained. “Though I guess I don’t have any room to judge since I did the same thing…”
“So what would you have wanted at a wedding?” Massimo pressed.
“Friends and family have to be there–anyone important to you,” Elena said. “And it needs to be somewhere pretty, maybe-”
Elena suddenly realized how intently Massimo was listening. He was definitely going to just make a checklist out of her suggestions if she wasn’t very careful.
Elena feigned a cough. “But the big thing is that the wedding needs to be special to the couple,” Elena stressed.” It needs to be important to the bride and groom.”
Massimo looked confused. “Important how?” he asked. “Like, money–wise?”
Elena shook her head. “Listen, a destination wedding to France or the Bahamas won’t mean as much if the couple doesn’t care. You need to make sure it’s at a place that’s meaningful to them–then you can find all the fancy bells and whistles to add on,” Elena advised.
Massimo hummed in response, clearly thinking over Elena’s words. He sighed as he rolled over on his bed. “I guess I’ll have to talk with Gavino more about what he and his soon–to–be wife want,” he replied.
Elena could only smile at her boss‘ antics. She was pleased at how much Massimo had cha.. eds. met him. These days, it was much easier for him to show his affection and care in his relationships.

Elena woke up refreshed and ready for the day. Massimo was already awake, so she started planning with him as they packed up and checked out of their room.
“Your men need a hospital,” Elena declared.
Massimo nodded as he returned his key to the hotel’s receptionist. It only took a few seconds for her to check them out.
“Luca can find something along our route,” Massimo said. “In fact, he should’ve-”
Massimo stopped his tracks and narrowed his eyes.
“What’s up?” Elena asked. “Is there something-”
“Elena!” a familiar voice greeted.
Elena immediately spun around. She hadn’t heard that voice in far too long. She doubted whether she had misplaced the sound, but Elena’s ears hadn’t deceived her.
In the lobby was Aria, Elena’s old roommate and best friend. The bubbly woman ran up to Elena and hugged her. Aria was noticeably less warm with Massimo–which was fair, Elena thought, since the two were exes.
“What are you doing here?” Elena asked, trying to diffuse any tension.
“I should be asking you that, silly!” Aria replied. “If you told me you were traveling up here, I would’ve made plans with you to hang out–just like the good old days.”
Aria looked over at Massimo. “Though I’m guessing you’re here for work, not fun.”
Massimo just grunted in response.
“It’s mostly wrapped up,” Elena said.
“That’s good at least,” Aria replied. “Where are you guys headed? Maybe one of my boyfriends could give you a lift?”
Massimo frowned. Elena followed her boss‘ eye line and saw that Luca and Gavino were headed downstairs to the lobby.
Aria might know that Elena and Massimo were in the mafia, but there were some things a civilian should never see. Elena quickly took a step to the side so that Aria would move with her–and be less likely to see anything incriminating.
“Actually, I have some time!” Elena said quickly. “Why don’t we make up for some lost time and catch up?”
Aria smiled. “Yes! There’s this coffee shop nearby that you’ll love-”
“Don’t stay out too late,” Massimo warned. “We need to leave in the next hour.”
“Now, El, let’s get to it!”

“Got it,” Aria replied dismissively. “Now, El, let’s get to it!”
Elena was glad Aria picked the coffee store next door to chat. It was a quiet little place. With its soft music a white stone walls, it just felt cozy.

“So like, as usual, my love life is a mess,” Aria said, finishing her story on her latest boyfriend.
“But your family is doing okay?” Elena asked.
“It’s fifty–fifty,” Aria confessed. “Like, I love my grandparents, but they baby my cousin so bad! He is so used to everyone doing everything for him–and you know that won’t fly with me!”
“But,” Aria continued, “I’ve already talked your ear off about so much–I’m not gonna waste a minute on my dumbass cousin. What have you been up to–and spare no detail, El!”
“Good,” Elena replied. She tried to think of anything that wasn’t mafia related and came up with nothing to share. “Not much has really happened.”
“Boo,” Aria said with a frown. “Try it again, El. Like, where did you end up moving to after I left?”
“Massimo’s place,” Elena answered honestly. She took a sip of her coffee. “It makes the commute to work really
easy.
“Shut up! Wait, weren’t you trying to get back together with your mystery husband?” Aria pressed.
Elena nodded her head. “Yep. He had to miss that meetup, but he still wants to stay married–and he’s back to texting me all the time,” Elena replied.
“El, I’m supposed to be the one who’s boy–crazy,” Aria said with a laugh. “But you’re living with your boss while you’re married to a stranger? Girl, that’s too complicated—and I’m saying that, so you know you’ve messed up!”
Elena laughed back. “Oh, you think that’s complicated? You don’t know the half of it, Aria…”
Aria perked up instantly. “Don’t you dare tease me like that, El. Keep talking, and give me all the juicy details.”
Maybe it was the warm beverage and fun company. Maybe it was the fact Elena knew that pretty soon, everyone in New York would know her as the Mafia Queen. But she didn’t see any harm in sharing a few details with Aria.
“Well, since you guys got divorced, Massimo’s in a tough spot,” Elena whispered. “So I now have a second job? I’m pretending to be his wife.”
Aria’s eyes widened. “El,” she said in a hushed whisper. “That really is complicated, wow.”
Elena took another sip of her coffee. “I know, right?”
Aria frowned. “I hate to see you like this, you know? A good girl like you needs some good men in her life!”
Elena chuckled. “If I knew how to get them, I would,” she replied.
“It’s easy,” Aria said seriously. “The first step is to divorce that online nobody and then call off the fake marriage to your boss!”
