Chapter 20

“It’s because seafood is a delicacy in many places of the world. People like to feel superior to others.”
“So what, people will lie and say a chewy dead fish is delicious so long as they know other people can’t eat it?”
“Pretty much. Have you ever actually tried caviar? It’s like eating liquid salt.”
Elena snorted and tried not to choke on her food. She strategically picked at the lettuce and vegetables that hadn’t been touched by the fish.
“So I won’t spend my generous work bonus on buying you fish eggs then. Never fear though, I will find you the perfect present for our meeting.”
“You don’t need to get me anything.”
“Too late, I’m getting you a gift no matter what you say!”
One of the Ferraro servants refilled Elena’s glass of water. Given the circumstances of her morning, Elena became more alert to her surroundings. As the servant passed into the kitchen, Elena strained her ears to catch any sound.
“You need to call the hotel out in Las Vegas,” one of the servants was saying, “and make sure they have everything ready to Don Massimo’s preferences.”
“Do you know how long he’ll be staying there?” the other whispered back. Or maybe she wasn’t whispering, and her voice was just muffled by the building’s thick walls.
“Near the end of this month and into the start of the next. You’ll need to check with Master Luca for the exact
dates.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Elena smiled. There was a good chance that if her boss was out of state, she’d get time off. Just then, her phone buzzed with a new message from her husband.
“Monday doesn’t actually work anymore. It looks like I’ll be needing to work late for the next seven days.”
“That’s rough, but no worries. Now we’ve both canceled on a potential meet–up, so we’re even now.”
“I’m not sure that’s how that works.”
“It is, I promise. Be sure to take care of yourself.”
“You sound like my grandfather,” her husband told her.
Elena grinned and defended herself. “Mr. Fabio gives good advice! You can’t be working yourself into an early grave.”
“How many night shifts have you taken at your job lately?”
“Hey, I’m going to bed early while I’m on this business trip”
“Sure you are.” Elena didn’t need to hear her husband’s voie to know he was being sarcastic.
She took the lull in their conversation as a chance to switch topics.
“How about we meet up on the last Sunday of this month?”
Immediately, she got a reply.
“That works for me. We can iron out the details later–I’ve got to get to my next meeting.”

Elena passed the next seven days following a similar routin–she’d laze about the estate, have silly conversations over text messages with her husband, and focus on resting up. It turned out to be a successful plan. Her shoulder was already starting to feel much better.
Elena decided she could risk getting the wound wet. She had wanted to take a bath for a while now.
After breakfast, she got the attention of one of the servants–a blonde girl by the name of Kara. Elena had gotten directions from the woman before during her stay. Kara had a big sister type of personality and had done an excellent job of making sure Elena didn’t overexert herself.
“Do you know where there’s a bathtub I can use?” Elena asked her.
“Just upstairs and down the hall to the right. It’s the fourth door, the one with a little flower petal carved above it.”
Elena followed the servant’s directions. The bathroom had a giant bathtub–it was more like the size of a swimming pool. All around its lip were a dozen different faucets and buttons and bath products in designer bottles.
Already, the tub was filled with hot water and some sweet smelling lotions. Elena eagerly slipped out of her clothes and stepped inside.
As she was beginning to get settled, Massimo rose from the water. The two locked eyes with each other, each of them completely naked.
