Chapter 237
Elena couldn’t agree fast enough. “Yes,” she said.
Her husband delicately pressed a finger to her lips before kissing her. But it wasn’t at all what she was expecting.
The kiss was just as delicate. It was short but full of love. It was almost chaste.
Elena was confused. That couldn’t have been it. Not after all the teasing and the flirting–surely, her husband was just taking a step back and giving her a chance to prepare for the passionate, messy, desperate kiss that was to follow.
But as she heard no footsteps return her way, Elena was less certain. Was he messing with her? But no, why would he feed her out of his hands like that if he wasn’t interested in taking things further?
Elena’s phone buzzed. Annoyed and disappointed, she finally removed her blindfold.
“I hope you had a nice time,” her husband texted her.
“I did,” Elena replied. “At least until that awful goodbye kiss. You better make it up to me on our next date.”
“It was awful?” her husband asked.
“Way too short,” Elena confirmed. “We had longer, more passionate touches in the garden.”
“I’ll do better next time,” Max promised. “I’ll make you regret asking for more.”
Elena could almost hear Max’s deep voice making this promise. It sent a shiver down her spine. She wanted to know just how passionate her husband could get.
Though Elena wanted nothing more than to keep flirting with her husband, she knew she had to hurry on her way home. The bus would stop running soon, and she didn’t want to be stuck walking all the way home in the
cold.
To Elena’s surprise, Massimo was returning back to the estate at the same moment she was.
“Massimo,” she greeted. “I didn’t realize you were out this late.”
“Mafia emergency,” he said hurriedly. “But it’s all settled now. And I suppose you just got back from your date?”
“Was it that obvious?” she asked, suddenly self–conscious.
Massimo shrugged. “You’re not normally out late, and since it wasn’t for work, that left one option,” he explained hurriedly.
Elena frowned. She guessed that did make some amount of sense.
“Anyways,” Massimo continued, “I got your phone back. It’s all good now.”
Massimo reached into his pocket and handed Elena her work phone. Elena hadn’t realized how much she had missed it until now.
“Thanks,” she said. “I’ll return the cell you lent me to Luca in the morning.”

Massimo nodded. He opened the door and ushered Elena inside. It was only once they were both in the safety of the Ferraro estate that he spoke up again.
“My subordinates couldn’t trace the unknown caller,” he confessed. “He called a few more times—and each time, he was at a different location. Your caller was pretty clearly traveling across the country,”
Elena frowned. “Where did he last call from?”
“Pennsylvania,” Massimo stated.
That was only a state away from New York! Massimo must’ve noticed Elena’s concerned expression because he quickly continued, “But that was over three weeks ago–the longest time between any call yet.”
Elena only hummed in response.
“It’s probably just a wrong number–like you thought,” Massimo stated. “If someone was trying to find you, he would already be in New York by now. Which means I would’ve heard about him by now.”
