"Look subtly to your left," Massimo commanded. "Now—quickly."
With the opening notes of a new song, Massimo dipped Elena low. Elena doubted any onlooker would think anything of the move. The Mafia King and Queen were just enthusiastically showing off their superior dance skills.
But in reality, Elena now had a clear view of all the people who were, until seconds ago, firmly behind her. As commanded, she cast her gaze to the left.
It took only a moment to spot a familiar face in the crowd—Consigliere Leo Morello, one of Tyler's top advisors.
Elena was quickly pulled back up. Massimo held her close once more.
Elena leaned into Massimo's ear. "Is it just Leo here?"
"That I've spotted so far. Though I admit he's moving through the crowds pretty quickly. Either way, we should be on the lookout for trouble."
Massimo boldly crossed the dance floor, spinning Elena here and there. Elena lamented how long the song was—it would look odd for them to leave in the middle. The best she could do was keep her eyes peeled—
"Wait," Elena hissed. "Turn thirty degrees to your right. Are those who I think they are?"
Massimo completed an expert turn. She could tell the exact moment she saw the group she had spotted—his brows immediately furrowed.
"Members of the Tarantino and D'Amico families," he said with a frown. "And it looks like they're headed over to where Leo is at the bar."
"Why don't we split up?" Elena asked. "I can ask Don Grasso's wife why she invited Massachusetts dons to such a small gathering while you figure out why Leo's here."
Massimo snorted. "Leo's here because he has enough power to get himself anywhere he wants. And I'm not leaving you alone when enemies are about."
"Considering how many 'Women Only' parties Jill Grasso throws, I'm going to get more information out of her if I go alone," Elena argued. "I can try to stay away from the dons if you'd like?"
"So why invite them?" Elena asked.
"Because they're all clever little shits," Jill replied. "I met Consigliere Leo at that party where we first met—back when you revealed you were the Mafia Queen. And he asked for an invite for our annual little winter party."
Jill waved her hand dismissively. "Now I know this party isn't big or fancy, but Tom has been holding it every year since the kids left home. And, unfortunately, Tom had an important land deal being made by the Morello estate, so we couldn't risk upsetting a consigliere—so Leo got his little invite."
Elena nodded along. It made sense.
"Let me guess," Elena said. "Leo then pressured you to invite his friends from Massachusetts, too. And this was all before the dons there were publicly taxed by the Mafia King, so you didn't have any grounds to refuse without being rude."
"Yes," Jill confirmed easily, "but don't make me sound so passive, dear. I figured this could be a nice early holiday present for you and your husband. Leo has now publicly tied himself to some allies, which means the Morellos are tied to these shits."
