But then she grabbed her medical bag at a much more familiar, hurried speed and opened the door. She smiled—it was a tight, fake smile.
"Anyone I should help first?" Elena asked quickly.
"No," Massimo said simply. "They're all dead."
As he saw the smile waver on Elena's face, he realized that wasn't the right thing to say. Apparently, there was a difference between being in a dangerous situation and commenting on its reality that unsettled even someone like Elena.
"You don't have to do anything," Massimo said. He hoped that sounded kinder. He was honestly too tired to tell if it was though.
Elena's brow furrowed as she looked at him. "Then let's focus on you."
"Me? I'm fine—"
"You've got some pretty deep cuts along your right shoulder, you're clearly favoring your left leg, and I want to see if that's dried blood or dirt on your forehead," Elena stated quickly. "So sit still inside the car for a moment."
Massimo knew from Elena's tone that he wouldn't be winning any arguments with her. So he sat down—but not before gesturing for Luca to come closer.
"Luca, check the bodies for any identification," Massimo ordered. "See if you can piece together what the hell caused this fight."
"Yes sir."
Elena opened up her medical bag. She took out some type of cleaner and cloth.
"I should be finished with Massimo by then," Elena called after Luca. "Then I'll be checking you for injuries, too!"
Elena tried to focus on taking care of Massimo. She really tried. But she couldn't.
She had just seen Massimo kill dozens of people. He hadn't blinked. He hadn't flinched.
Massimo just raised a gun or a knife and killed people. Like it was as easy as breathing. Like it meant nothing at all to him.
Elena had forgotten how terrifying the Mafia King, the Don of All Dons, could be. There was a reason he earned the nickname of the Boss of Blood and Ice. Few people could stomach the idea of being here, surrounded by so much bloodshed and death—yet Massimo was in his element.
As Elena treated Massimo's wounds, she couldn't help but understand her mother Sloane's deep fear of the mafia. When their king killed dozens upon dozens of people within seconds, it was hard not to be afraid.
