The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 286

That caught Massimo's attention. "Luca, take note of the layout of all these buildings—and even this outdoor area," he ordered.

Elena raised an eyebrow. "Are you looking for something?" Elena asked.

"We thought this might be a trial run for our response time, but what if it's a trial run for something else?" Massimo suggested. "I want to compare the layouts against likely targets Tyler might try attacking—like properties my family owns. Just to be safe."

Elena only nodded as Luca quickly got to work. Massimo could tell his new theory troubled her. But the Mafia King had no idea how to comfort her, so he simply stayed quiet.

Elena hated the quiet. She hated the quiet of the long car drive. She hated how Luca and Massimo barely exchanged ten words before deciding to detour and see if Massimo's men needed help.

Luckily, the traffic jams hadn't caused too much damage to any of the Ferraro subordinates. Still, Elena was grateful for the sounds of stalled cars, wrangled animals, and even the swears of frustrated mafia men.

She was even more grateful that Massimo insisted all his men get checked over for injuries. Right now more than anything, Elena wanted to get lost in her work. Few people needed more than a bandaid or the resetting of a bone—honestly, Massimo's surprising talent as a mechanic was more helpful than Elena's talents as a doctor.

Still, Elena was grateful for the distraction, even if it meant she and Massimo got back to the estate very late into the evening.

Because the second Elena was alone in her bed, she had to think about the horrors she had witnessed mere hours ago. The amount of senseless bloodshed that was spilled—the sheer number of people who had died for no reason.

The Sobano and Nitello families were wiped out in one fight. Elena would likely never hear those names again—not at parties, not from gossiping mafia wives and dates, not ever. They would become like the Lombardis, a family name that people were afraid to whisper about.

And for what? The Sobanos and Nitellos hadn't broken any mafia laws like the Lombardis, but for no greater reason than the fact mafia dons were cruel and power-hungry, two family lineages were gone forever. So many people died...

Elena was startled by her phone ringing. It was Max—or well, her husband. Elena knew she should ask him about his name, but she simply didn't have the energy for that conversation right now.
