The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 295

Massimo walked to one of the empty rows within the shooting range. It wasn't crowded—quite the opposite, in fact. A single old man practiced in one of the rows, and it looked like he would be packing up in a few minutes.

It's one of the reasons Massimo chose this shooting range in particular to practice at. As he set everything up at the furthest row, he was confident they wouldn't be disturbed. Elena could learn in peace, and there was minimal chance anyone from the mafia would hear about it at all.

Elena, however, was not looking confident or even at ease as she followed Massimo. She still had that perplexed expression stuck on her face.

Massimo handed her a gun—one he bought especially for her. It was a lighter model, claimed to have a less severe recoil, and could easily be stored in a woman's purse. It was the best gun she could start with.

"And why am I learning how to use a gun?" Elena asked, clearly confused as she looked at the cold metal in her hands.

Massimo knew Elena wouldn't listen to his real reason, but he luckily had plenty of motives that sounded persuasive enough.

"Because you keep running into danger without a second thought," Massimo recounted. "You go after unknown assailants or spies like you're invincible and you can't even be trusted to take any guards with you. And since this behavior isn't going to change any time soon, I would like it my personal doctor could handle herself in a fight—at least long enough for backup to arrive."

These were all excellent reasons for Elena to learn a way to defend herself—Massimo could tell by the way Elena scrunched up her eyebrows and pursed her lips in thought that she couldn't find fault in his logic. And, to be fair, these reasons had contributed to Massimo taking the plunge and bringing Elena to a firing range. But they weren't his main motivation.

"Fine," Elena said suddenly. "Just don't be annoyed when I don't immediately pick up any of the skills or tricks to this. I've never held a gun before this moment."

Elena might've said all that, but she hadn't expected to be this bad at shooting. The movies made firing a gun look so easy—just point and pull the trigger. Turns out there were a half dozen other things she needed to keep track of—how steady her hands were, whether they were positioned to deal with the "kick" that came from releasing a bullet, how to apply the right amount of strength to the trigger without messing up her grip.

She honestly expected Massimo to give up after that pitiful two hour block where she hadn't even managed to hit a single target. But he didn't. Every day after work, he took her to the same shooting range to practice.

And since the work wasn't that taxing or even long, that meant Elena spent easily half a day at the shooting range during their trip. Honestly, she wasn't sure why Massimo had insisted she come along. The few meetings Massimo dragged her didn't require the Mafia Queen at all.
