The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 301

Elena thought it over, again and again as she practiced firing her gun. The phone number she had seen on Massimo's screen looked like hers. Even if she hadn't made out the full ten digits, she was confident in most of the numbers—the area code was the only set that had been completely obscured by Massimo's hand.

The odds of someone having such a similar number were low. Add that and the fact Elena had been trying to call her husband at the exact moment Massimo's own phone rang...

Elena felt ridiculous for even entertaining the thought for a moment. But when she tried top think of a different explanation, her mind went blank.

It would explain Max's callouses, wouldn't it?

And then, the flood of thoughts began to flow out like waves. How Max had known those small details about her life without telling him, why he didn't care about her pretending to be another's man wife despite originally wanting to break off their relationship the second he suspected her of being sexually loose, and even why Max refused to show his face... All the little details of Max and Massimo that Elena had taken for granted or easily excused were coming back and making themselves known.

Wouldn't it make more sense if they were the same person? So many coincidences that, on their own, wouldn't cause suspicion built into a dangerous conspiracy.

"This is crazy," Elena thought to herself. But immediately she also thought, "Yet I've never seen them in the same place at the same time. I've never even spoken on the phone with Max while in front of Massimo, or vice versa..."

Elena waited until she and Massimo were back at the estate to test her theory. Specifically, she sent Max a quick innocent text, "Are you busy?" while she and Massimo had a quick dinner.

She didn't get a reply.

Then, Elena waited until Massimo excused himself to his office. Elena took out her phone again and called Max.

And despite not answering her call earlier or even responding to her text, Max answered on the first ring. Interesting.

"Hey," Elena said calmly. "I tried to call you earlier."

"Work was busy," Max's deep voice replied. "Just got around to taking my break now."

"What about tomorrow evening?" Elena suggested. She knew Massimo didn't have any important meetings then. If Max couldn't make it, maybe that would be enough proof to stop her mind from spinning—

"That works," Max replied. "I'll pick out a quiet spot for dinner and champagne."

Elena swallowed. "That sounds... great."

Though Elena would've loved nothing more than to unravel this new theory her brain had made up, she had other responsibilities. That's why the next day after work, Elena met up with her half-brother Matteo in one of the parks.

"We got maybe an hour before I'm missed," Matteo said breezily as he sat on a park bench. He tapped it once and gestured for Elena to sit next to him. "By your text, this sounded important, so what's up?"

Elena gingerly took a seat. "Do you think Alessia and Father are actually going to attend the party?"
