The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 314

Honestly, less than a hundred families even had one member competing at red. Sure, there were a fair number of talented men competing at the yellow rank, but the bulk of the guests were competing at green. This was supposed to just be a friendly competition after all—no need to risk your life over it.

"I don't recall seeing you ever competently handle a gun before," Elena quipped as she passed him by.

Matteo just grinned at her. "I've been practicing—like, for real practicing at gun ranges and stuff. Next year, I'll be competing at the yellow rank."

It was only a few months since Matteo woke up from his coma. The fact he had improved his shooting skills at all during that time was impressive.

Elena didn't think too deeply on that though. After all, Matteo was already running off and excitedly talking to some mafia men his own age. Elena didn't recognize them—which meant they were neither allies of the Vitales or the Morellos.

Elena silently wished her half-brother luck in the competition, too.

Elena fixed her own white ribbon on her chest. Her competition had already started but only four shooters could go at a time until they took all five of their shots. And, more importantly, Massimo had stuck with tradition, which meant that the competitors were shooting in order of their ranking in the mafia, going from lowest to highest.

Which meant Elena had plenty of time to wait.

She was a bit annoyed that the competitors at the white rank were given a small, dainty ribbon instead of an arm band, but it quickly became obvious why that was. Most of the competitors were young children or women. Obviously, there was some misplaced tradition about not ruining a lady's outfit or something.

"And finally, the last set of competitors," the referee called. "Please take your places behind the line. On mark... shoot!"

Elena let out a breath. She hadn't made a total fool out of herself. Her final score placed her in the top ten out of her fifty fellow competitors.

The moment she saw some of these women and young boys compete, Elena knew she wouldn't be making the top three—or even the top five. She was happy to stand in front of the winner's platform and cheer on the three lucky contestants who held the top scores.

As one of the referees finished pinning the blue ribbon on the young woman who won, a loud howling broke out. It was animalistic and feral. And most importantly, it wasn't coming from far away—by the sounds of it, whatever was howling was rapidly approaching.
