But something told him the problem wasn't coming from the green zone. So Massimo adjusted their course and headed to the "dead" zone.
There should've been a large outpost stationed there. There should have been at least twenty guards on duty, with five staff members keeping an eye on their phones and radios for any trouble. And all that should've been overkill for an area that was completely out of bounds for the competition.
Yet when Elena and Massimo arrived at the outpost, they found it lacking. Not a single person was around.
"It's like they just disappeared," Elena said quietly, her voice filled with horrified awe.
Massimo could appreciate the sentiment. As it was, he was both annoyed and a little impressed.
"There's no signs of any struggle," he muttered as he searched the area thoroughly. "What the fuck happened here?"
Elena frowned. She could only shrug her shoulders.
Massimo kept looking around the outpost, as if there were any clues. But he and Elena both knew the undergrowth beneath their feet was too thick to reliably track footprints. Besides, what little marks Massimo might find could be from hours ago.
Elena had a sudden idea. She walked over to where the staffers had set up a few computers—sheltered from potential bad weather under a simple wooden awning. She started up one of the devices.
"There's some parts of what look like a cage," Massimo reported. "They're hastily undone, but whoever brought them took the time to hide them in some bushes."
"That's... not great," Elena replied, distracted.
Massimo marched over to her side. "They're big enough to fit a bear," Massimo stated. Then, after a moment, he asked, "What are you looking at?"
"I'm wondering if the guards got diverted from this area," Elena explained. "I mean, this was supposed to be a quiet area, and it's not a far walk from the other zones. So if someone reported a problem nearby, staffers would probably send people from here over to the problem, right?"
No signs of a struggle. Again, everyone was just gone like they had magically disappeared.
"The computer's still on," Massimo observed. "And some people made tea recently—it's still hot. People were here until recently."
"But there's no messages asking them to move," Elena observed. "At least none that we know of... Do you think maybe they went to investigate that cave."
Elena pointed at the cave in question. It was one of the few rocky parts of the woods. The cave didn't look too big from the outside, but it was completely dark at its mouth.
"It's worth looking into," Massimo said with a sigh.
As Massimo and Elena approached, they saw that the cave was not unoccupied—there was a pack of wolves inside. The second the beasts spotted the two, they began to gnash their teeth and growl, clearly ready to defend their home.
