Elena didn't flinch. She wouldn't give Consigliere Leo, one of Tyler Morello's top advisors, the satisfaction. Instead, she kept her mouth in a tight line as he sat next to her.
"They should start manually counting each kill now," Leo continued, oblivious to Elena's discomfort. Or maybe he was all too aware of it—the smirk he gave her certainly seemed smug. "Your husband certainly pulled his weight."
"Yes," Elena agreed. "I'm sorry to see that the Morellos didn't even make it into the top twenty."
"It is surprising, isn't it?" Leo agreed. "Though I hear the referees have been a bit... distracted, so I wouldn't be surprised if these ranks aren't accurate."
Elena followed Leo's line of sight to the ten top families that were gathered around the giant digital scoreboard. The competitors stood in front of the stage, waiting for the referees to count all the animal pelts and trophies the hunters had brought back as proof of their kills. Many families brought the whole dead animal—no doubt to dispel any rumors of cheating.
The top ten families had been saved for last. One by one, their kills were counted in front of the audience.
Elena realized that if anyone was accused of cheating, every single mafia family would know. Was that Leo's plan? Add the unfair kills to the Ferraro's pile so they would be declared cheaters in front of everyone?
Or was it more simple? The other families' kills were being counted off to the side. It would be trivial for the Morellos or their allies to sneak additional dead animals into their counts and inflate their scores.
Elena waited to see what would happen.
But nothing happened. The final scores were input—they weren't significantly different from what had been projected onto the digital scoreboard. A few families' scores were off by a few points, but not enough to change their ranking.
Elena looked at Massimo's smug expression as the final scores were updated on the digital scoreboard. He had known about Leo's plan! Somehow, he had kept the unfair kills from being added!
"It seems the referees were more accurate than expected," Elena said slyly. "Perhaps you and your friends from Massachusetts can apply yourselves more in the upcoming year."
"Perhaps," Leo said simply.
