Elena was delighted to see her phone buzz with a new text message from her husband Max.
"You got back from your work trip, right?" he asked. "Are you free for a date next week?"
Elena couldn't type fast enough. "Yes," she quickly replied. "I can't wait to see you in person again."
"I was hoping we could do something different this time," Max responded. "I want this date to be special."
Elena's heart fluttered. What could her lover be planning?
Her phone buzzed again before she could ask any questions.
"There's this greenhouse, The Rose of the City, that holds a big masquerade party every year," Max explained. "It's to celebrate the last day of winter and welcome the way for spring—that's at least what their website says."
Max sent Elena a link to the website. The Rose of the City was gorgeous—it looked like a garden house maintained by some fantasy fairies and woodland animals. It was giant and housed some truly impressive plants.
But most importantly, The Rose of the City was known in the mafia world as being fully neutral. As far as crime went, the owners and workers didn't align themselves with any of the local mafia families. They neither accepted blood money to run their operation nor paid "protection" fees that criminals would sometimes demand in exchange for not causing trouble.
Ordinarily, that would be like a death sentence. Practically every business in all of New York was owned or partnered with a mafia family for a reason. Yet The Rose of the City had managed to stay open for generations—it was a known fact that you didn't mess with that greenhouse, that it provided a valuable service of being one of the few truly neutral pieces of territory within the entire state.
Elena couldn't have been more pleased. Her husband wasn't only doing something nice for her—he had taken into account her mafia status when planning this whole outing. He had really listened to her concerns!
