"We make toys," Jack said slowly. "Like the nice robots you see on the shelf of every toy store or the viral teddy bears that the internet has been going crazy for."
Elena laughed. When no one was joking, she realized Jack wasn't acting—he genuinely thought he was answering her question.
"Ah no, that's not what I meant," Elena clarified. "I mean, what do you each do at the company? Like how Noah handles the licensing agreements or Jack is in charge of the sales' department?"
"Matt does production," Noah helpfully supplied, raising his glass to the previously unidentified brother. "Want to explain that, Matt?"
Matt sighed. "It's taking the schematics Kevin has approved and sending them to different factories. Do you know what schematics are—or factories?"
No matter what Elena said, the Winslows continued to talk down to her. Elena was surprised by just how little they assumed she didn't know. She had to cut off Jack before he tried to explain the concept of revenue to her.
Elena thought it would get better as the evening continued, but they were still acting like Elena didn't understand anything by the time the main courses arrived! Nothing Elena could say could convince them otherwise.
"I'm essentially in charge of one team that then oversees a lot of smaller teams," Jack needlessly explained as he cut into his steak. "I know that might be a difficult concept, but all businesses—not just toy companies—are run this way. And people at different levels have different access to different things."
Elena silently thought that this wasn't all that different from how the mafia worked. It was really a simple concept.
You had the don at the top—or Mr. Winslow, in the case of this company. Then you had the consiglieres—or Mrs. Winslow and the board. Then there were capos—the brothers—who were in charge of no rank mafia men or "soldiers" as they were sometimes called—basically, the everyday employees.
Elena even repeated this hierarchy—sans the mafia connections—back to Jack, but he still acted like Elena didn't understand the first thing about what he did at the company! How could everyone be so dense!
Suddenly, Sloane, who had been quiet this whole dinner, cleared her throat. She glanced once at Elena and smiled briefly before looking back at Cameron and Jack.
