The Mafia King's Unknown Doctor Wife novel Chapter 393

Alone in front of the gigantic mirror and fancy sinks, Elena could finally breathe again. This dinner was turning into a disaster. So Elena pulled out her phone.

Without thinking, she scrolled through her contacts. Her finger was suddenly hovering over "Max's" contact info.

Elena felt her heart stop.

How many times had she texted her husband during awkward social gatherings? Elena could think of dozens of parties—dangerous mafia parties—where she snuck away to text "Max" and get a little bit of encouragement. Whenever Elena was ever feeling doubtful or unsure, she'd talk to her husband and together they would find a way to strengthen her resolve.

Elena would've given anything to have that rush of confidence overtake her now. But at the same time, was it wise to talk to Massimo? Wasn't "Max" just an act?

Against her better judgment, Elena opened her text history with "Max." But instead of texting him, she just looked through their old messages.

Massimo dealt with a lot of her issues and provided so much advice over the months they had been talking. And though she was doubtful of his motives, Elena couldn't deny how easily she could now hear Massimo's voice in each message. It wasn't anything Massimo would saw to a group of mafia men—but hadn't he been gentle with Elena before?

Would it be fair to say that these messages from "Max" might be the most genuine ones Massimo could've provided? Free from his image of a tough Mafia King, he could speak his mind. And despite losing that role and embracing the anonymity that came from being behind a screen, Massimo still tried so hard to connect to her anyways...

Maybe it wouldn't hurt to send one message?

Just as Elena was about to draft a text, the door to the woman's bathroom swung open.

"Are you okay, Elena?" Sloane was suddenly rushing into the restroom, concern etched on her face.

Elena hurriedly pocketed her phone. "Are you?" Elena asked. "Here, I can give you some privacy—"

"That's not necessary," Sloane said. "I was looking for you after all, silly." You didn't seem to be doing too well back there."

"I could say the same about you," Elena said instead of answering.

Sloane frowned. "You... you get used to it," she replied slowly.
