Audrey smiled softly. "You showed up in your favorite suit just to visit a friend and save me from a PR nightmare. I couldn't be more grateful. Why would that cause me trouble?"
It was just internet gossip, after all.
Miles returned the smile. "True. Just like Joaquin never clarifies his relationship with Rainey to the press, I haven't clarified my relationship with you."
Hearing Joaquin's name made a heavy knot form in Audrey's chest. The internet had been tearing her apart all day, and Joaquin hadn't lifted a finger. His protective display in front of Arthur Sinclair last night had been nothing but a performance. He didn't actually care if she was humiliated or bullied.
Meanwhile, in Australia, Joaquin had just walked off his private jet.
His phone pinged with links forwarded by Felix. He clicked the first one. It was the paparazzi photo of him and Audrey, accompanied by articles filled with vicious, degrading insults calling her a homewrecker and a tramp.
A vein throbbed in Joaquin's temple. Just as he was about to call Chase to scorch the earth, Felix sent another link.
This one was a photo of Audrey and Miles on set. Miles, wearing the exact same suit from the viral pictures, was handing her a takeout bag with a gentlemanly grace, and Audrey was beaming as she reached for it.
Joaquin stared at her face, completely mesmerized for a second. It had been so long since he had seen her smile that brightly. He never expected to see it in a photo, directed at another man giving her food.
