Audrey’s eyes darkened. To Joaquin, she was just a pathetic woman with no income, revolving her entire existence around him.
In reality, she was the highly sought-after screenwriter known as Quill. After marrying him, she’d poured all her energy into being the perfect high-society wife. Aside from drafting scripts at home, she delegated on-set duties to her assistants and protégés.
She had never intentionally hidden her work from him. If he’d paid even an ounce of attention, he wouldn’t be throwing her jobless status in her face.
"Exactly," Rainey chimed in, a smug gleam in her eyes as Joaquin blocked Audrey’s path. "It’s not like you’re like us, with real emergencies to handle. You’re a housewife. What could possibly be so urgent?"
She tilted her head, blinking innocently. "Unless I’m right, and there really is something going on between you and Miles?"
"Ms. Sinclair, I’ve warned you multiple times to watch what you say," Miles interjected, his voice dropping to a freezing temperature. "If Mrs. Judd and I were actually having an affair, do you really think we’d rendezvous at a coffee shop right next to the hospital you’re staying at? What, were we afraid you wouldn’t catch us?"
Joaquin scoffed, his hawk-like gaze cutting sideways to Audrey. "Maybe someone wanted me to find out."
"Joaquin." Audrey’s grip tightened around her purse. "Are you out of your mind?"
She had been holding back since they walked in, not out of fear, but because she refused to make an ugly scene in front of the man who had graciously helped her. They might not have any shame, but she did.
Joaquin’s eyes darkened as he glared at her. "Who’s out of their mind? You refused to let me touch you last night, but today you’re letting another man hold your ankle? Tell me, are you really asking for a divorce because Rainey is back, or because you’ve already lined up your next target?"
For the entire year of their marriage, she had been perfectly obedient, waiting for him at home every single day. At social events, she stayed quietly by his side, barely uttering a word. She only had eyes for him and had never spoken more than three sentences to another man. And now, she was letting someone else touch her so intimately!
His accusations hit her like a sledgehammer. He could stroll around arm-in-arm with Rainey, kiss her when he was drunk, but the moment Miles offered basic first aid for her injury without crossing any lines, Joaquin accused her of scouting for a new lover.
