The Moment I Realized I Can't Lose You novel Chapter 36

"Get out of the car." When she didn't respond, Joaquin pushed his door open and stepped out. "If you're hungry, let's stop wasting time. A lot of these tests require you to be on an empty stomach. The sooner we get them done, the sooner you can eat."

Still sitting in the passenger seat, Audrey stared at him, caught in a total bind. She thought playing along with Rainey’s demands would force him to leave and fetch the food himself. Instead, her little stunt completely backfired. Not only had she failed to derail his plans, but she’d accidentally diffused the explosive tension between them.

If she threw another tantrum and refused to go in now, it would look incredibly suspicious. Joaquin wasn't an idiot. He’d instantly realize she was hiding something.

Gritting her teeth, she finally stepped out of the car and reluctantly followed him to the elevators.

The moment they stepped into the hospital lobby, Audrey’s phone buzzed.

It was a text from Miles. She opened it to find a picture of herself, dragging her feet down the hallway.

She’s looking at a picture of *herself*, right now?

Her eyes went wide, and she immediately looked up, scanning the area. A few yards away, leaning on his crutches, was Miles Foster, offering her an easy smile.

"Mr. Foster!" Her face lit up in genuine shock. "What are you doing here?"

Beside her, Joaquin’s eyes narrowed dangerously. He clearly saw how Audrey’s miserable expression completely transformed the second she laid eyes on the other man. It was as if someone had flicked a switch, illuminating her from the inside out.

Joaquin yanked at his tie, a sharp wave of irritation rolling through him. Was she really that thrilled to see him?

"This hospital belongs to the Foster family. Is it really that strange for me to be here?" Miles chuckled, shifting his weight on his crutches before looking at Joaquin. "Are you here for a check-up, Mr. Judd?"
