Perhaps it was the crushing weight of the emotional fallout catching up to her physically, but the very night Audrey returned from the hospital, she came down with a vicious fever.
The housekeeper, Martha, panicked and called an ambulance, rushing her straight to St. Jude’s.
Thankfully, it was just a severe strain of the flu. The doctor prescribed some mild fever reducers and let Martha take her back home.
Over the next few days, the fever spiked and broke in relentless waves. To keep a closer eye on her, Martha practically moved into the manor. Several times, she suggested calling Joaquin, but Audrey shut it down every single time.
He was too busy playing nursemaid to Rainey. Why would he have a single second to spare for his actual wife? If he possessed even an ounce of genuine care for her, he wouldn't have gone days without sending a single text or making a single call.
Even if Martha successfully dragged him back home, Audrey knew exactly how it would play out. He would cast a cold, detached glance over her, tell her to "eat well and rest," and leave immediately.
His tenderness, his patience—those were reserved exclusively for Rainey. Why should she beg for scraps and humiliate herself?
...
A week later, Audrey had fully recovered.
That morning, as she walked downstairs, she was greeted by the sight of the staff hauling massive boxes of fresh, imported ingredients into the kitchen. All of them were Joaquin’s favorites.
Frowning, she walked over. "What is all this?"
"Ma'am!" one of the maids beamed, setting down a crate. "These are the premium ingredients flown in from overseas! Today is your wedding anniversary! You reserved these over half a month ago. You said you wanted to cook a massive feast yourself to give Mr. Judd an unforgettable night!"
The maid practically swooned as she looked at Audrey. "No wonder you wouldn't let Martha call Mr. Judd all week, even when you were so sick. You were saving the grand surprise for today! Mr. Judd is so incredibly lucky to have married a woman like you!"
Hearing the maid’s cheerful praise, Audrey froze. Today was her anniversary with Joaquin. In the past, she had treated this day like the most sacred event of the year. She had counted down the days, meticulously planning a five-course menu, pulling strings with high-end suppliers just to ensure the freshest ingredients were flown in on the exact day...
But back when she planned all of this, she didn't know she was pregnant. And she certainly didn't know Rainey had sneaked back into the country.
