It was true–a pregnant woman’s emotions were on a completely different wavelengh The slightest thing could set them off.
“You’ve needed a good talking-to for a long time,” Isabelle muttered.
Diana decided not to push back.
Just then, Bruce knocked and entered the room.
“Mrs. Cross. Ms. Williams,” he said, his tone deliberately cheerful.
Isabel e glanced at him, wondering why he’d come upstairs when she’d told him to wait in the car.
Bruce pressed his lips together and didn’t explain, simply taking a quiet position near Isabelle.
Less than five minutes later, there was another knock at the door.
It was Collin.
Diana looked at Bruce and had to admire his quick thinking. Bruce must have spotted Collin getting out of his car carrying a thermos when he parked, which was why he’d come up.
But Collin’s hands were empty now.
“Collin, what brings you by?” Diana greeted him with a smile.
Collin’s gaze swept over Isabelle, then back to Diana, his thoughts/seeming to drift for a moment.
Isabelle noticed the shift in his demeanor and focused on the faint, yellowish bruise still visible at the corner of his mouth.
“My mom’s on another floor. I was in the building, so I thought I’d stop in,” he paused, avoiding Isabelle’s eyes as he asked Diana, “How are you holding up?”
“I’ll be alright. Just need some time to heal.”
“I have some medicated scar gel left. I’ll bring it by for you tomorrow.” The gel he mentioned was likely the same tube Damian had returned to him-barely used.
“Okay, thanks,” Diana replied.
“Don’t mention it.”
“How is Linda doing?” Isabelle asked.
“She took a turn for the worse. It’s… not good. She was moved to the ICU last night but has stabilized for now,” Collin said, his voice carefully even.
The truth couldn’t be hidden anymore-Linda was aware of her condition now.
Still, she was putting on a brave face. Some part of her had already suspected, but since no one around her spoke of it, she had buried her fears. If they didn’t want her to know, she would pretend not to-it made things easier for everyone,

sabette and Diana exchanged a lonk
Naturally, Diana couldn visit upstairs in her condition, but isabelle wanted to see Ciqda.
In times like these, every visit counted. No one knew if tragedy or tomorrow would arrive first.
After exchanging a few more words with Diana, Collim turned to leave.
Isabelle followed him out, with Bruce quickly falling into step behind them-though this time, he kept a respectful distance.
“Are you holding up okay?” Isabelle asked, glancing at Collin.
“Not really,” he admitted quietly.
Bruce frowned. If you’re not okay, just say you’re fine. Who has the energy to deal with this?

Isabelle stayed silent too. She wasn’t sure what words of comfort would even help, especially when things had reached the stage of quiet acceptance.
“About that day… I’m sorry,” Isabelle said.
“What?” Collin seemed confused at first, but then understanding dawned as he saw the look on her face.
A bitter smile touched his lips. “It was my fault. I thought…”
He had thought she wasn’t happy with Damian.
“Damian shouldn’t have hit you. I’m sorry on his behalf,” Isabelle said, her gaze apologetic.
“Don’t be. I had it coming,” Collin replied. He’d brought it on himself by crossing a line he shouldn’t have.
Bruce rubbed his nose. So Collin got punched? Sounded like he’d missed quite a scene. Served him right. A faint, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
He wouldn’t have minded throwing a punch himself.
“Maybe it’s better this way. At least there won’t be any more misunderstandings between us,” Isabelle said.
“We’re still friends, right?” Collin asked.
“Still friends,” Isabelle replied with a soft smile.
They arrived at Linda’s room.
An oxygen mask covered her face, and her hands, thin and marked with bluish bruises from repeated IVs, lay still on the sheets She looked frailer than she had just days before, as if the flesh had melted from her bones.
“She’s been asleep for a while. She woke up twice but couldn’t keep much down,” Collin said, his expression growing heavier.
Isabelle opened her mouth to offer comfort, but he spoke first, “Don’t try to make me feel better. We knew this was coming. I thought I was prepared, but now that it’s here… it’s just hard.”
