I watch the war in his eyes, the pain, the fear, the anger. I watch as his eyes start to burn with tears that I know he won’t shed. Quicker than I expected, he reverses our positions, and he leans over careful not to press too tightly against my stomach as he takes my mouth in a passionate, dirty, desperate kiss. I know my mate, and I know he’s struggling with this fear and not feeling like he has total control of my safety, so I give him everything he needs. I give him control, I give him my submission, and when he spins me around, I give him my body.

say anything, she just comes over and sits in my lap, wrapping her arms around my neck.

I bury my face in her neck, never more terrified than I am right now that I could lose so much in this life. It’s one thing to go to war knowing you could lose your own life. You adjust to that. It’ s altogether different when a war puts your mate and pup at risk.

My mate, knowing me like no other, opens the link between us and pours her love between us. She holds me, letting her love flow as I use her scent to calm myself.

“I’m right here, Robin. I’m safe. Your pup is safe,” she says softly, kissing the top of my head.

I held my mate tightly until I calmed down, but it didn’t help as, over the week, Aiden began adding even more patrols, and periodically, my patrols would see him, Camden, or Aiden.

The night before we went to the Alpha ceremony, I couldn’t sleep. It feels like Aiden has been ratcheting up, preparing for something. So, after Nikki goes to sleep, I go out and run patrols. After talking to Kayce, he’d added more patrols to our shared border so I could put my patrols on Aiden’s border. I still needed patrols on the two unshared borders, but most of my patrols are now on Aiden’s border.

“I can’t lose you, you or our pup. I love you so much. Nikki, please, please be careful. I need to know that you won’t fight, that if we’re attacked that you’ll get yourself into a safe room. Nikki, I can’t…I can’t…” I feel my throat tighten, unable to finish talking.
