It’s the howl of the hunt.

Alpha David POV

“Alpha, they beat us here,” my Beta, Cash, says.

I can smell them, all of them. They’re ahead of us and it’s pissing me off. I thought having ten pack members would be sufficient to hunt one damn Beta female, Cash’s sister. But it’s not when you have seven Alphas out hunting for one of their mates. A mate that just happened to connect with my little Jackie.

“If they get to them first, they’ll take Jackie, I’m sure of it,” I say.

“What was all that bullshit about not allowing public claimings? It’s the law,” Cash says.

“It is. But I heard a rumor that there was a territory that was changing that. Obviously, this is that territory.”

I turn, looking out over the territory where we are. “Why do you think that Luna is on the run?”

“Based on the scent in this cave, I’d say she has a pup. Maybe he’s abusive, I don’t know.”

“What kind of a man abuses the woman who is carrying her pup?” I

ask him.

“It happens. I don’t agree with it, but it happens,” he says. “So, should we follow them?”

I take another deep breath, catching the faintest scent of apricots.

“No. We’re too far behind them. I’d bet that Jackie would want to get back to the river and let it hide her scent from us again. Let’s head that way. Maybe we can get in front of these Alphas and catch up to Jackie and her new friend. If that Luna is pretty enough, you can have her.”

“I’m not raising some Alpha’s pup,” he says.

“If they’re not far behind us, we could leave the pup for them to find. That would slow them down. I don’t want to kill the pup, but we could use it as leverage for the Luna. ‘Come with us and we’ll let your pup live‘. Something like that.”

“We could always give her to one of the warriors if I don’t like her. I’m still hoping to find my fated mate,” he says.

“Whatever. As long as I get Jackie,” I say. “Let’s go.”

We’ve been running for several hours when we catch her scent. Her apricot scent is mixed with the scent of lotus flowers and something musky. The musk is probably the pup, I’m guessing it’s a boy.
