When I finally start to warm up, I begin moving faster. I’ve just found her scent, the faint scent of watered–down apricots when I hear another howl.

I stop, something drawing me toward the sound. Suddenly, I feel Adira fighting, wanting to come forward, wanting her mate.

“Robin.” I whisper his name like a prayer. Then, I lift my head to the sky and howl. It’s a human’s howl, but if Derric is strong enough to howl, he’ll recognize my voice.

I hear the howl again, this time much more intent and a few moments later, Derric comes tearing around the bend in the river.

I feel the weight of everything that has happened to me come crashing down now that my mate is here and alive. He shifts, staring at me and panting.

“Nikki?”

I begin walking to him, opening my arms. He rushes to me, wrapping his arms around me, and holding me tightly against him, burying his face in my neck. I take a deep breath of his musk and earth scent as I cling to him.

“Oh, my goddess, Nikki, I finally found. I finally found you,” he says, his own voice tight with emotion.

I hold on to him tightly as I burst into tears.

When Kayce said he thought Nikki went into the river, I didn’t hesitate and neither did Derric. He leaped. Camden’s scent is still strong, and I have no idea where he went. I have to find her and my pup before he does. I have no doubt that he’ll kill my pup and make Nikki suffer if he gets to her before I do.

Derric is still weak, but our adrenaline is pumping, knowing that we’re so close to finding our mate. His nose is in the air as we swim across the river, staying in the current, but moving as close as we can get to the other bank. Nikki is smart. She wouldn’t have wanted to stay on the same bank that Camden and that other pack were on.

As we’re swimming, I realize that the other she–wolf’s scent was very faint. I’m hoping that doesn’t mean that they got her and Nikki was fighting them to get her back. If they did, we’ll hunt them down and take her under our protection, but right now, I have to find my mate. I need to know that she’s alright, that she’s safe.

The minute Derric catches her scent, he begins swimming hard to the shoreline. At first, her scent is watered down, but as we follow her

scent, it gets stronger.

Derric lifts his head to the sky, howling for our mate. I’m hoping that Adira is strong enough to recognize the sound of his howl.

It takes a moment, but then we hear it, the sound of a human howling. Derric takes off and I know that it was Nikki’s howl, calling us to her.

-He’s running as hard as he can and when we turn a corner, she’s

standing there, naked and shivering. Her stomach is still soft from her delivery, so I know that Adira isn’t strong enough to heal her yet. It says even more about the strength of my mate that she’s out here fighting for her life and the life of our pup with nothing more than human strength. I shift quickly, not moving, unsure if she’s angry that it took me so long to find her.

“Nikki?” I ask. I want her in my arms. I want to hold her, but I’m not sure what to expect from her. She was alone when she needed me

most.

When I see her lips begin to tremble, my strong, Alpha female

beginning to break down as she opens her arms to me, I don’t hesitate. I race to her and hold her tightly as all of her fear comes pouring out of

her.

“I’ve got you. I’ve got you. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry it took so long for me to find you,” I say to her over and over as I take deep breaths of her scent, letting it calm me and heal Derric.
