Jacqueline lays down in front of the fire, but I see her frowning at our discussion. I’m guessing the Alphas that she knows didn’t talk about their mates and pups like we do.

I settle back, letting Derric open his senses to keep watch as I press my nose to Nikki’s hair, letting her scent calm and heal me.

I haven’t slept, not really, since Camden took me from Robin. So, waking up with the weight of my pup in my arms and my mate’s scent in my nose is the best possible wake up I’ve had in a very long time.

When Rory begins fussing, I open my eyes and look around. I see Ezra stoking the fire and Jake looking like he just woke up.

“What time is it?” I ask quietly, moving the shirt so I can nurse my son,

Ezra looks up at the sky. “I’d guess we’re about thirty minutes to an hour before sunrise.”

“When are we heading out?” I ask him.

“Whenever you and Jacqueline are ready to go.”

I look at my mate, reaching out mentally and feeling that he’s still deeply asleep. “How is he, really?” I ask softly.

focuses on the fire. “Not as bad as you, I’d

guess.”

“That’s a crap answer, Alpha,” I tell him quietly, knowing that he’s avoiding answering my question.

Ezra looks up, his eyes on Robin. “I’ve never seen a wolf so close to going feral in my life, and I’m older than all of you. I’ve seen a lot, suffered a lot…” he shakes his head. “I loved Diana, I truly did. And I was devastated when she and my pup died. But I don’t think I ever got to the place that Robin did. If something would have happened to you. If Camden had somehow left his mark on you…”

“We’d have had to put him down,” Hunter says, sitting up and rubbing his face. “He was that close, Nikki. It got worse after he thought you lost your pup. He was blaming himself, hating himself. I’m guessing he still is and that’s just one more thing that the two of you will have to work through.”

“But you’re not alone. Neither of you are alone. We’re all here to help you. Allison and I are only a border away,” Kayce says.

“I don’t think he wants me going anywhere near that border any time soon,” I say, knowing that when we get home, Robin is going to be very protective of me and his pup. I’m sure I’ll be okay with it, at least for a little while. I’ll be worried about something happening to our pup

too.

“I’ve added a lot more patrols to that particular part of our borders. It was a weakness in our defenses that has been rectified,” Kayce says, and I can tell he feels guilty for what he perceives as his own

“We attacked Aiden assuming Camden took you back to his pack. The pack is gone, we wiped them out. Koden got away, and obviously so did Camden. We kept Aiden alive, but when Robin realized he knew nothing about where you were, he killed him,” Hunter says.

“How did Camden lose his foot?” I ask them

“I’m guessing you put him in the shackles he was holding you in. He cut his foot off to avoid facing Robin,” Jake says as the others start to wake up. I’m a little surprised that Robin isn’t shifting around yet. I guess that says a lot about how exhausted he was and probably how much my scent and having me and his pup in his arms is relaxing him

and Derric.

“What can you tell us about Jacqueline?” Dutton asks.

“Nothing that she can’t tell you herself, although she may not say everything that I would. I owe her my life. She saved me and Rory when she was on the run and trying to hide herself. She could have left us, but she didn’t. She’s loyal, strong, and compassionate.”

“She reminds me of someone I know and love,” Robin says sleepily from behind me. He kisses the side of my head, looking over my shoulder at Rory.

“You haven’t held your son yet, Robin. He’s almost done. Would you like to hold him?”

“Yeah, I would. I need to stand up and stretch and go to the bathroom. And then, I’m not sure you’ll get him back before he’s ready to nurse again,” he says, and I can feel his excitement to finally hold his pup.
