Chapter 439
“Of course,” I say, lifting Rory out of the water. I wrap him in a baby blanket and carry him to the changing table set up in the nursery. I gently dry him off, watching as he starts getting fussy.
I finally figure out how to put a diaper on him. It’s not great, but it stays on, and then I get him in his little onesie. By the time I’m done, he’s loudly complaining that he’s hungry.
“Here,” Nikki says, coming to take him from me. “He’s a big eater and he gets quite hangry when I’m late feeding him.”
My mate is wrapped up in a fluffy robe with a towel wrapped up on her head. She goes to the rocking chair in the room and sits, pulling out her breast and helping Rory to latch on. She begins rocking, running her finger over his cheek while he nurses before looking up and smiling at me.
“I’ll uh…I’ll just go get things ready for when you’re done,” I say, feeling like an outsider. My mate and my son have bonded, and I wasn’t there to be a part of it.
୮
When I walk back into our bedroom, I look at the bed. I don’t expect that my mate will want me sleeping next to her, but I need to stay close to them right now, so I pull a pillow and a blanket onto the floor in between the bed and nursery so that Derric and I can monitor both of them while they sleep. Then I go into the bathroom and take a shower, needing to wash away all of the grime from our time on the
run too.

>When I get out of the shower, I wrap a towel around my waist and step back into our bedroom. Nikki is frowning at the pillow and blanket on
the floor.
“What’s this?”
“I’m sure you don’t want me sleeping in bed with you right now, but Derric and I need to be close to you and Rory…”
Before I finish, she goes to the pillow and błanket and grabbing them off the floor. “You’re not sleeping on the floor Robin.”
“Nikki, please don’t kick me out. I need be close to the two of you right now,” I say, feeling panicked that she’ll make me leave our room. I guess I can sleep outside the door and keep watch over them that
way.
She puts the pillow and blanket on the bed and turns to me. Whether she feels the panic in me or sees it on my face, I’m not sure, but she walks over to me, taking my face in her hands.
“Your place is in our bed, beside me, Robin. You are my mate. You are our son’s father. Your place is at our side.”
I feel the tears burning in my eyes again. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t protect you.”
“I don’t blame you, my love. I know you did everything possible to find
me…”
I shake my head. “I should have done more. I should have found you more quickly.”
