I lean over Robin, wrapping my arms around him from behind and pressing the side of my head to his while he shows off our son to our pack members. He pulls my hand to his mouth and kisses it without missing a beat, because that’s the kind of man and Alpha he is.

Then I kiss his head and go to get the two of us some food, before returning and joining in the conversation. By the time we’re done eating, I feel like most, if not all, of our pack members have stopped by oùr table. I know they wanted to see Rory again, but they also need the reassurance that Robin and I are back and safe, ensuring that our pack is safe as well.

It feels good to be in sync with my mate. We both take our time, talking to our pack members until Rory begins fussing and I take him from Robin to nurse him again.

“He really eats every two hours?” Robin asks me.

“Like clockwork,” I tell him.

I can feel my mate getting antsy that I’m nursing our son in front of most of the pack who is still lingering in the dining hall.

“I can walk and nurse at the same time,” I tell him.

“Are you sure?” he asks. I just stare at him, waiting for it to click. I didn’t have a choice while we were on the run.

I don’t love my mate nursing our son in front of the pack. I understand their need to be around us, their excitement at seeing their Alpha heir, and I can already feel the pack relaxing. But that doesn’t mean that I like it. Thankfully, my mate, my absolutely perfect mate, seems to understand me intuitively.

I feel like a damn junkie. I can’t get enough of her. Her scent, her touch, her smile, her voice, her mind, it’s like I’m trying to fill the holes in my heart and soul from the time that she was gone by sucking every bit of everything that I can get from her. She’s the one who woke up screaming from a nightmare this morning, and yet, she’s here, healing the pack and me. She’s so much stronger than I am. She’s the pillar that gives me strength, that gives this pack its strength.

As we walk to the pack hospital, I wrap an arm around her, feeling almost obsessively protective of her and Rory. I know she understands my feelings and I know she’s okay with them, for now. But I also know that at some point, she’s going to stand her ground with me and force me to back off. However, that day is not today, so I continue to hover over her, looking everywhere to make sure my family is safe while we walk.

When we arrive, they take us to a room immediately. I’m sure that our doctor has been waiting for us. I probably should have linked ahead that we were on our way, but my mind still isn’t back to being one

Nikki finishes nursing and quickly burps Rory before laying him on the table for Dr. Ostin to look over. She steps back and I wrap my arm around her as we watch the doctor listen to his heart, lungs, check his eyes and ears, and all the other things that doctors do to make sure that a baby is healthy.

“How premature was he Luna?” he asks.

“I’m not exactly sure. A couple of weeks at least,” she says.

I look at her. “You delivered him how many days ago?”

“Five days, I think. It’s hard to keep track when you’re on the run.”

“He wasn’t due for another week and a half, Doc. So yeah, he was about two or so weeks premature,” I say.

“How is he eating?”

“Every two hours and he nurses for about thirty minutes at a time, sometimes longer.”
